Chapter 18: The Last Enemy

Nobody spoke after I showed Claire the video.

Because there was nothing left to say.

The truth had become too large.

Too ugly.

Too complicated.

I looked at the screen again.

The voice.

The person behind the camera.

The person who had been there from the beginning.

The person who knew every secret.

“Who recorded this?””

Claire’s face went pale.

She looked at the video.

Then at me.

“Ethan…”

“Who?””

She whispered a name.

And my heart sank.

Because it was the name of someone I had trusted.

Someone who had never appeared suspicious.

Someone who had always been there.

“The person who raised you.””

I stared.

“Daniel?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I waited.

“The person who raised you after Daniel.””

My mind went blank.

There was only one person.

The person who cared for me when my father worked late.

The person who attended school events.

The person everyone described as family.

My aunt.

But that didn’t make sense.

She had already admitted helping Robert.

Why would she expose him now?

I called her.

She answered immediately.

“Ethan.””

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then:

“You know.””

I gripped the phone.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A long pause.

“Because I needed you to find the truth.””

I closed my eyes.

“You could have told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because you would have hated me.””

I laughed.

“I already do.””

The silence hurt.

“I deserve that.””

I looked at Claire.

Then at the video.

“What are you hiding?””

My aunt’s voice became quiet.

“The reason Robert changed everything.””

“What reason?””

“Because he discovered something about you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He discovered that you weren’t the only person connected to Michael.””

My heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Robert wasn’t afraid of Michael.””

“Then who?””

Her answer came slowly.

“He was afraid of you.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

I heard her breathing.

“Ethan, there is something about your birth that nobody told you.””

I waited.

“Something that made Robert willing to destroy everyone.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“You were born with proof.””

I stared.

“Proof of what?””

“Proof of what Robert had done.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked terrified.

My aunt continued.

“Michael recorded everything before you were born.””

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

“That’s what Robert spent years trying to find.””

My heart pounded.

“And you know?””

“I found it.””

The room went silent.

“Where?””

My aunt whispered:

“Inside the safe.””

The safe.

The one connected to the key.

The one Robert hid.

I looked at the key in my hand.

“What’s inside?””

Her voice broke.

“The original recording.””

“Of Robert?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Of the person who ordered him.””

I froze.

“The person who ordered him?””

“Yes.””

My aunt’s voice dropped.

“The person who planned everything from the beginning.””

I looked around the room.

At Claire.

At the photograph.

At the lies.

For eighteen years, I thought my story was about a mother who disappeared.

Then I thought it was about a grandfather who stole me.

Then I thought it was about a family built on fear.

But I was wrong.

It was about someone else.

Someone who had been watching.

Waiting.

Controlling everything from the shadows.

My aunt said one final sentence before hanging up.

“Ethan, when you open that safe…”

Her voice trembled.

“Prepare yourself.””

May you like

“Because the person you’re going to discover…”

“Is the person you called family your entire life.””
