Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

I drove to Claire’s apartment so fast I barely remembered the journey.

My mind kept rejecting the same thought.

Emily is alive.

The woman everyone said disappeared.

The woman connected to my birth.

The woman who might know the truth.

When I arrived, Claire was standing by the door waiting for me.

Her face looked exhausted.

“She contacted me again.””

“Where is she?””

Claire shook her head.

“She won’t meet in person.””

“Why?””

“She says it isn’t safe.””

I walked inside.

“What did she send?””

Claire handed me a laptop.

An email was open.

No subject.

No signature.

Only a video file.

I clicked play.

The screen showed an older woman sitting in a dim room.

For a moment, I didn’t recognize her.

Then she looked into the camera.

And I knew.

It was Emily.

Older.

Tired.

But the same eyes from the photograph.

My breath stopped.

“Ethan,” she said.

Hearing my name from her felt impossible.

“I know you don’t know me.””

Her voice shook.

“But I knew you before anyone else did.””

The video continued.

“I was there when you were born.””

I leaned closer.

“I was there when your grandfather took you.””

My heart pounded.

“I tried to stop him.””

Emily looked down.

“I failed.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Emily continued.

“Your father was told you died.””

I looked at Claire.

Then back at the screen.

“He believed it for years.””

My chest tightened.

“But Daniel eventually found the truth.””

The room went silent.

My father knew.

Again.

Another secret.

The video continued.

“When Daniel discovered Ethan was alive, he tried to fix everything.””

I frowned.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Emily’s expression changed.

“Because your grandfather threatened him.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What threat?””

The video ended.

Just like that.

No explanation.

No answer.

Only darkness.

I looked at Claire.

“That’s it?””

She nodded.

“There was another message.””

“What message?””

She handed me a piece of paper.

Three words.

Meet me alone.

I stared at it.

“She wants to meet me.””

Claire nodded.

“She said she can finally explain everything.””

I stood there, overwhelmed.

My entire life had become a puzzle made from lies.

A mother who was alive.

A father who wasn’t my biological father.

A grandfather who stole me.

A woman who disappeared protecting me.

And now the final missing piece wanted to tell me the truth.

Before I left, Claire grabbed my arm.

“Ethan.””

I turned.

“You need to be careful.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Because if Emily survived eighteen years of hiding…”

She looked toward the window.

“Someone must have been trying very hard to keep her hidden.””

I arrived at the meeting place an hour later.

It was an old park on the edge of town.

The same park from the photograph.

I waited.

Ten minutes.

Twenty.

Then a woman appeared near the trees.

Older.

Walking slowly.

Holding a small envelope.

My heart stopped.

“Ethan?””

I couldn’t speak.

She came closer.

“I’m Emily.””

I looked at the woman who had been missing my entire life.

The woman who held me when I was a baby.

The woman who knew the truth everyone else buried.

She handed me the envelope.

“I’m sorry it took this long.””

I opened my mouth.

“Why did you disappear?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because the night they took you…”

She looked around nervously.

“Your father wasn’t the only person who helped them.””

I froze.

“What?””

Emily placed the envelope in my hand.

Inside was a document.

A birth certificate.

But the name listed under my biological father wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been lying to me my entire life.

May you like

Emily whispered:

“Ethan… your real father has been standing beside you since the day you were born.””
