Chapter 16: The Person Behind the Curtain
I should have listened.
Every instinct told me to stay away.
My aunt’s warning.
Daniel’s fear.
Emily’s silence.
All of it screamed that I was walking toward something dangerous.
But after eighteen years of people deciding what I could handle, I couldn’t turn around.
Not anymore.
I drove to the location alone.
An abandoned office building on the edge of town.
The kind of place people forgot existed.
The windows were broken.
The parking lot was empty.
And yet someone had sent me here.
Someone who knew everything.
I held the key from Robert’s safe in my pocket.
The only thing left from a man who had spent my entire life controlling the truth.
I walked inside.
The hallway smelled like dust and old paper.
“Hello?””
My voice echoed.
No answer.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone walking toward me.
A figure appeared at the end of the hallway.
And I stopped breathing.
“Ethan.””
I knew that voice.
But it couldn’t be real.
“You?””
The person stepped into the light.
My entire body went cold.
Because standing in front of me was someone I never expected to see.
Someone who had been part of my life for years.
Someone I trusted.
My mother’s eyes.
My father’s kindness.
A familiar face hiding an unfamiliar truth.
“Why are you here?”” I whispered.
The person looked at me sadly.
“Because you deserve to know everything.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I’m done with that sentence.””
A painful smile appeared.
“I know.””
“Everyone says they’re protecting me.””
“I know.””
“Everyone lies.””
The person lowered their eyes.
“I know.””
That answer made me angry.
“Then why?””
A long silence followed.
Finally:
“Because Robert wasn’t the one who started this.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“He continued it.””
I stared.
“Explain.””
The person walked toward an old desk.
On top was a small recorder.
“I was there the day you were born.””
My heart raced.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the recorder.
“Who are you?””
The person pressed play.
Robert’s voice filled the room.
But this time, it sounded different.
Not powerful.
Afraid.
“If you’re hearing this, then they found the truth.””
The recording continued.
“I thought I could control the situation.””
A pause.
“But I was wrong.””
The person standing across from me looked at the floor.
Robert’s voice continued.
“There was someone who knew about Ethan before anyone else.””
My hands tightened.
“Someone who arranged everything.””
The recording crackled.
“Someone who wanted Ethan removed from Claire’s life.””
My breathing became heavier.
The person turned toward me.
“You need to understand something.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Robert was manipulated too.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Are you defending him?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“I’m explaining him.””
The recording continued.
“She convinced me that taking Ethan would solve the problem.””
I froze.
“She?””
The voice continued.
“She told me Daniel would raise him. She told me Claire would eventually move on.””
I looked at the person.
“Who?””
The recorder stopped.
Silence.
Then the person said:
“The woman who has been pretending to search for you.””
My heart dropped.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
I shook my head.
“Claire?””
The person didn’t answer.
They didn’t need to.
The truth hit me like a wave.
My mother.
The woman who cried when she found me.
The woman who said she spent eighteen years searching.
The woman everyone believed was innocent.
Could she really be the one behind everything?
“No.””
I backed away.
“You’re lying.””
The person reached for another folder.
“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
Inside was a photograph.
Claire.
Robert.
Together.
Not after my disappearance.
Before.
Much before.
On the back was a date.
The day before I was born.
And one sentence.
“I know what we have to do tomorrow.””
I stared.
The person whispered:
“Your mother didn’t lose you.””
May you like
My heart stopped.
“She gave you away.””
