Chapter 11: The Man Who Lost His Son
The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and rain.
I stood outside the door for nearly five minutes before I could convince myself to knock.
The name on the room card made my chest tighten.
Michael Hayes.
The man I had spent eighteen years not knowing.
The man whose blood ran through my veins.
The man who had supposedly abandoned me.
A nurse opened the door.
“Are you Ethan?””
I nodded.
She smiled softly.
“He’s been waiting.””
Waiting.
That word hurt.
Because I had spent my entire life thinking nobody was waiting for me.
I walked inside.
An older man sat near the window.
He looked fragile.
Not like the villain I had imagined.
Not like someone who had walked away.
Like someone who had been carrying pain for years.
He turned.
And the second he saw me, tears filled his eyes.
“Ethan.””
I froze.
Hearing my name from him felt familiar.
Like a song I had forgotten.
“I don’t know what to say.””
Michael smiled sadly.
“You don’t have to say anything.””
I remained standing.
“You left.””
His face fell.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked down.
“Because I thought leaving was the only way to keep you alive.””
I hated that answer.
Because everyone used the same excuse.
Protection.
Fear.
Love.
Everyone had a reason.
“And did it work?””
Michael looked at me.
“What?””
“Did leaving me work?””
Silence.
His eyes filled.
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
“No, it didn’t.””
I sat across from him.
“Then tell me the truth.””
He nodded.
“I met Claire when she was nineteen.””
I listened.
“She was the strongest person I ever knew.””
A small smile appeared.
“She believed people could be better than they were.””
I looked away.
“She believed that about Robert too.””
Michael’s expression darkened.
“And she was wrong.””
The room became quiet.
“Robert knew I loved her.””
“He knew you were my father?””
“Not at first.””
Michael looked toward the window.
“When Claire became pregnant, Robert thought the baby was his.””
I frowned.
“But he wasn’t?””
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“Robert had lied to Claire about everything.””
I swallowed.
“What did he do?””
“He manipulated her. Controlled her.””
My hands tightened.
“And when he found out you were mine?””
“He lost control.””
Michael’s voice became colder.
“He couldn’t accept that Claire chose someone else.””
I looked down.
“So he took me.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you stop him?””
Michael closed his eyes.
“I tried.””
The pain in his voice sounded real.
“I fought him legally. I confronted him.””
“And?””
“He threatened Claire.””
“With what?””
“With you.””
I looked away.
Again.
Me.
The weapon everyone used.
Michael continued.
“Then one night, I disappeared.””
“What happened?””
“I was attacked.””
My head lifted.
“What?””
“Robert sent people after me.””
I stared.
“He wanted me gone.””
“Did he try to kill you?””
Michael didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
A long silence followed.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
His voice became barely audible.
“Because I woke up in a hospital under another name.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He had people watching me.””
I felt sick.
“They made sure I couldn’t contact anyone.””
“How did you survive?””
“Someone helped me.””
“Who?””
Michael looked at me.
“Emily.””
Everything connected.
“She knew?””
“She knew everything.””
I shook my head.
“So why didn’t she tell me sooner?””
“She was afraid.””
“Of Robert?””
Michael nodded.
“He spent years convincing people he was untouchable.””
I looked at him.
“Where is he now?””
Michael’s face changed.
“He’s dead.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He died six years ago.””
The room went silent.
“But if he’s dead…”
Michael looked at me.
“His secrets weren’t.””
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
Another message.
This time from Emily.
A single sentence.
“I found the person who helped Robert hide everything.””
I showed Michael.
His face immediately changed.
“Who?””
I looked at the message.
Then at him.
The next line appeared.
“The person who signed the final document.””
A name followed.
And both of us froze.
Because it was impossible.
May you like
The person was still alive.
And had been pretending to help us all along.
