Chapter 12: The Final Signature
I arrived at Emily’s apartment before sunrise.
I didn’t call.
I didn’t text.
I just needed answers.
When she opened the door and saw my face, she immediately knew.
“You saw Michael.””
I stepped inside.
“Yes.””
She closed the door.
“What did he tell you?””
“That he was my father.””
Emily nodded.
“And?””
“And that you knew.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because every person who tried ended up losing something.””
I shook my head.
“I lost eighteen years.””
She accepted that.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I placed the document on the table.
“The final signature.””
Emily looked at it.
Her face changed.
“You found it.””
“Who signed it?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Tell me.””
Emily sat down slowly.
“It was Daniel.””
My heart sank.
“No.””
She nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
I stepped back.
“My father?””
“He didn’t know what he was signing.””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It does.””
I looked at her.
“Explain.””
Emily took a breath.
“Robert created a fake document. He told Daniel it was temporary guardianship paperwork.””
“So Daniel signed without reading?””
“Yes.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That sounds like him.””
Emily looked hurt.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
I turned away.
“I’m tired of defending people who lied to me.””
She was quiet.
Then she said:
“You should be angry.””
I looked back.
“But don’t be angry at the wrong person.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Emily reached into a drawer.
She pulled out an envelope.
“This was found after Robert died.””
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was my grandfather’s.
I almost didn’t want to open it.
But I did.
Ethan,
If you are reading this, then my plan failed.
My plan.
Those words alone made my stomach turn.
I kept reading.
I spent my life believing control was the same as love. I was wrong.
I stopped.
A confession?
From him?
The letter continued.
You were never supposed to suffer. You were supposed to be mine.
I clenched my jaw.
But then I made choices that hurt everyone.
I looked at Emily.
“Why would he write this?””
She whispered:
“Because he knew he was dying.””
I continued reading.
There was one final line.
A line that made me stop breathing.
I didn’t steal Ethan because he was my son.
I stole him because I was afraid he would choose someone else.
The room was silent.
For the first time, Robert wasn’t a monster in my imagination.
He was worse.
He was a person who knew exactly what he was doing.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Ethan.””
His voice sounded urgent.
“What happened?””
“Where are you?””
I frowned.
“At Emily’s.””
Silence.
Then:
“You need to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because I just found out who sent those messages.””
My body went still.
“Who?””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“The person who has been helping us.””
I looked at Emily.
“What are you talking about?””
A pause.
Then my father whispered:
“Ethan…”
“Who?””
His answer came quietly.
And it changed everything.
“It’s your mother.””
I froze.
Claire.
My mother.
The woman who had spent eighteen years searching for me.
The woman I thought was a victim.
Daniel continued:
“She knew more than she admitted.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked just as shocked as I was.
Then the door behind me slowly opened.
Claire stood there.
May you like
Crying.
And holding the one document that could finally explain everything.
