Chapter 7: The Name Hidden on My Birth Certificate

I stared at the birth certificate until the letters stopped looking like words.

The paper trembled between my fingers.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to throw it away.

I wanted Emily to tell me this was another misunderstanding.

Another mistake.

Another piece of information that sounded impossible but had a reasonable explanation.

But the name was right there.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

Daniel Carter was not listed as my biological father.

The name written in that place belonged to someone else.

Someone I had known my entire life.

Someone I had trusted.

My grandfather.

Robert Carter.

I looked at Emily.

“No.””

She didn’t speak.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Her eyes softened.

“I wish it wasn’t.””

I folded the paper.

My hands were shaking.

“My grandfather?””

Emily nodded.

“He was your biological father.””

The world went quiet.

I could hear the wind moving through the trees.

Cars passing in the distance.

My own breathing.

Everything except the one thing I needed to understand.

“How?””

Emily sat down on the bench.

“You deserve the whole story.””

I remained standing.

“Then tell me.””

She looked down at her hands.

“Before Claire met Daniel, she was involved with Robert.””

I swallowed.

My grandfather.

The man whose house I visited every Christmas.

The man who gave me expensive gifts and told me I had his eyes.

The man who always looked at me like I belonged to him.

“I don’t understand.””

Emily sighed.

“Claire was young. She thought Robert loved her.””

“But he was older.””

“Yes.””

Her voice became quieter.

“He promised her a future. Then when she became pregnant, he panicked.””

I felt sick.

“What did he do?””

“He offered money.””

“To make her disappear?””

Emily nodded.

“But Claire refused.””

My fists tightened.

“She wanted me?””

“She wanted you more than anything.””

“Then why did she lose me?””

Emily looked at the ground.

“Because Robert knew Daniel loved her.””

I frowned.

“What does Daniel have to do with this?””

“He saw an opportunity.””

I waited.

“Robert convinced Daniel that Claire had cheated on him with someone else.””

My stomach dropped.

“Daniel believed that?””

“At first.””

Emily looked away.

“Then Daniel found out the truth.””

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“And he still stayed?””

Emily nodded.

“That’s what makes Daniel different.””

I thought about my father.

The man who raised me.

The man who had never missed a single important moment.

“He knew?””

“He knew Robert was your biological father.””

My voice broke.

“Then why did he pretend?””

“Because he loved you.””

I looked away.

That answer hurt.

Because I believed it.

And that made everything more complicated.

Emily continued.

“Daniel wanted to expose Robert. But Robert threatened him.””

“With what?””

“He threatened to destroy him.””

I laughed quietly.

“Destroy him how?””

“Robert had power. Money. Connections.””

She paused.

“He told Daniel that if he tried to take you away, he would make sure Claire lost everything.””

I looked at the birth certificate again.

“So my father stayed silent.””

“Yes.””

“And my mother?””

“She tried to fight.””

My eyes moved back to Emily.

“She did?””

Emily nodded.

“She collected evidence. She found records. She was determined to prove what Robert had done.””

“Then what happened?””

Emily’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“The night Robert took you…”

She stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel wasn’t the person who handed you over.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who was?””

Emily didn’t answer immediately.

She reached into her bag and pulled out another photograph.

This one was older.

It showed my grandfather.

Daniel.

And someone else.

A woman.

I recognized her instantly.

Because she had been in my life too.

My aunt.

My father’s sister.

I stared at the photo.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Emily’s expression turned serious.

“She was there that night.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“My aunt knew?””

Emily nodded.

“And she helped Robert.””

I couldn’t move.

My entire family history had become a crime scene.

Every person I trusted had a shadow behind them.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From my father.

Ethan, please come home. I need to tell you everything before someone else does.

I looked at Emily.

“Someone else?””

Her face went pale.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Your aunt knows we found the truth.””
