Chapter 15: The Heir of the Secret

The name on the document stayed in my mind all night.

My aunt.

The person who had spent years acting like she was protecting me.

The person who cried when she admitted what she had done.

The person who claimed she was another victim of Robert’s control.

But she had inherited everything.

Money.

Property.

Files.

Secrets.

I drove to her house without telling anyone.

I needed to hear it from her.

Not from documents.

Not from messages.

Not from another person who claimed they knew the truth.

She opened the door before I knocked.

Like she expected me.

“You know.””

Her words made me stop.

“You knew I would find out?””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

I walked inside.

The house was beautiful.

Too beautiful.

Everything looked expensive.

Everything looked untouched.

Like a museum.

“Did Robert leave you everything?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Why?””

She sat down.

“Because he trusted me.””

I stared.

“Trusted you?””

She nodded.

“He knew I understood him.””

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

She looked tired.

“It should make you angry.””

I crossed my arms.

“Good. Because I am.””

She accepted that.

“I hated him.””

The confession surprised me.

“Then why help him?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because hate and fear can exist together.””

I waited.

“When I was young, Robert controlled my entire life.””

“He was your father.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“And that didn’t make him love me.””

The words were painful.

Because I understood them.

She continued.

“He taught me that obedience was survival.””

I looked around.

“And the inheritance?””

“He gave it to me because he thought I would protect his secrets.””

“Did you?””

She didn’t answer.

“Did you protect them?””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone was afraid.””

She looked at me.

“Because everyone knew what Robert was capable of.””

“Then why are you still hiding?””

She stood.

“Because there is one thing you don’t know.””

I waited.

She walked to a cabinet and removed a small box.

Inside was a key.

“What is that?””

“The key to Robert’s last safe.””

I stared.

“I thought everything was found.””

“No.””

She handed it to me.

“He hid something even from me.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

She looked at the key.

“The truth about why he took you.””

I frowned.

“We know why.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You know why he told everyone.””

The room became silent.

“But not why he actually did it.””

I looked at the key.

“What’s inside?””

She whispered:

“Proof that your entire family story was built on another lie.””

I took the key.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From the same unknown number.

This time, there was no picture.

Only a location.

And one sentence.

“Come alone if you want to know who really chose your life.””

I looked at my aunt.

She had seen the message.

Her face went pale.

“Don’t go.””

“Why?””

Because for the first time, she looked truly terrified.

“Because whoever sent that…”

May you like

She swallowed.

“Is the person Robert was afraid of.””
