Chapter 5: The Truth Nick Hid
The reception ended without anyone saying goodbye.
The flowers were still on the tables.
The cake was untouched.
The music equipment was still set up.
But the wedding was over.
Not because of the haircut.
Not because of Martha.
Because everything I believed about my life had cracked open in one night.
I sat in the empty bridal suite staring at myself in the mirror.
My hair was uneven.
Ruined.
But somehow, that wasn’t what hurt anymore.
I touched the short strands near my face.
All those years I thought my hair was the thing Martha wanted to take from me.
I was wrong.
She wanted my identity.
A quiet knock came from the door.
“Emma?””
Nick.
I didn’t answer.
A few seconds later, he opened the door slightly.
“Can I come in?””
I looked at him through the mirror.
“You already decided things about me without asking.””
His face fell.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I turned around.
“You knew my entire life was a lie.””
Nick sat down slowly.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You knew enough.””
He looked down.
That was the answer.
I laughed softly.
“Wow.””
“Emma…”
“When did you find out?””
He took a long breath.
“Three months ago.””
I stared at him.
“Three months?””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me?””
He looked hurt.
“Because I love you.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not enough.””
The words hurt both of us.
But they were true.
Nick looked at the floor.
“When I found the file in my mother’s office, I thought it was about you because she was trying to investigate your family.””
“Investigate?””
“She had documents. Old records. Letters.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was scared.””
I stood.
“You were scared?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Of what?””
His answer was quiet.
“That if I told you, you would leave.””
The honesty almost made me angrier.
“You were protecting yourself.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You made a choice for me.””
Nick looked away.
“I thought I could handle it.””
“And tonight?””
He closed his eyes.
“Tonight I realized I couldn’t.””
A tear rolled down my cheek.
I hated that I still loved him.
I hated that after everything, part of me still wanted him to hold me and tell me everything would be okay.
But some things couldn’t be fixed with love.
Some things needed truth.
A knock interrupted us.
This time, it was Evelyn.
She stood in the doorway holding a small box.
“I think you should see this.””
I wiped my face.
“What is it?””
She walked inside.
“Something your mother never wanted you to find.””
Nick stood.
“Another secret?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She kept many.””
She placed the box on the table.
Inside were letters.
Dozens of them.
All unopened.
I picked up the first one.
My name was written on the front.
Emma Reed.
My hands shook.
“I’ve never seen these.””
“I know,” Evelyn said.
“Who sent them?””
She looked at me sadly.
“Your biological mother.””
The room went silent.
I opened the envelope carefully.
The paper inside was old.
The handwriting was shaky.
Dear Emma,
If you ever read this, it means someone finally decided you deserved the truth.
My heart pounded.
I kept reading.
I tried to come back for you.
I tried more times than I can count.
But Martha always found a way to stop me.
I looked at Evelyn.
“She knew where my mother was?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
The anger inside me grew.
“She stole my life.””
Evelyn didn’t disagree.
Nick picked up another letter.
His face changed as he read the first lines.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What does it say?””
He handed it to me.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
A name I had never seen before.
But the message above it made my blood run cold.
Emma, there is one thing Martha never told you.
Your father didn’t abandon us.
He died trying to get you back.
I covered my mouth.
The room disappeared.
My father.
The man I was told walked away.
The man everyone said didn’t care.
He had been searching for me.
Evelyn touched my shoulder.
“There’s more.””
I looked at her.
“What more?””
She pointed at the last letter.
The one still sealed.
“The final letter was written after your father died.””
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was only one page.
One sentence.
And when I read it, I understood why Martha had been terrified tonight.
May you like
Emma, if you are reading this, then Martha has found out who you really are.
And she knows you are the rightful heir to everything she spent her life protecting.
