Chapter 17: The Family That Was Built on Lies

The police arrived before Richard could escape.

Again.

But this time, he didn’t look worried.

That bothered me.

A man who had spent years destroying lives shouldn’t look so calm while being taken away.

Unless he knew something we didn’t.

And Richard always knew something.

By morning, the story was everywhere.

The wedding.

The haircut.

The inheritance.

The arrest.

The secrets.

My private nightmare had become public entertainment.

But I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

I sat in the hospital waiting room because Thomas had collapsed after Richard’s arrest.

Stress.

Shock.

Twenty-eight years of grief catching up all at once.

Laura sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, she whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“I know.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””

“I don’t know if I can.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

That answer surprised me.

Because I expected excuses.

But she didn’t give me any.

“I spent my whole life thinking you left.””

“I know.””

“I hated someone who was trying to come back.””

Laura looked down.

“I hated myself for every day I couldn’t.””

Silence.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””

She took a deep breath.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Richard?””

“Of what the truth would do to you.””

I looked away.

“Everyone decided what I could handle.””

She nodded.

“You’re right.””

The honesty hurt less.

Across the room, Nick stood by the window.

Watching us.

I walked toward him.

“You okay?””

He smiled sadly.

“I don’t think anyone is okay.””

That was true.

I looked at him.

“What happens now?””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

For the first time, I saw him without the weight of his mother.

Without trying to please anyone.

Just Nick.

“I need to ask you something.””

He looked at me.

“Did you know?””

His silence lasted too long.

My heart sank.

“Nick.””

“I knew your father wasn’t your biological father.””

I stepped back.

“What?””

“But I didn’t know who was.””

“Who told you?””

“My mother.””

“When?””

“Before we got married.””

I stared at him.

Another secret.

Another wound.

“I asked her why she hated you so much.””

His voice broke.

“She told me you would destroy my family.””

I looked away.

“And you believed her?””

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Nick closed his eyes.

“Because I was afraid of losing you.””

I nodded slowly.

“Everyone keeps saying they were afraid.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

“But fear doesn’t make it okay.””

“I know.””

The hardest part was that he finally understood.

Not because I explained.

Because he finally saw the damage.

A nurse approached.

“Emma Reed?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“Someone left this for you.””

She handed me a small envelope.

No name.

No return address.

My heart immediately tightened.

Because I knew.

More secrets.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was an old letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the first line made my blood run cold.

Emma, if you are reading this, then Martha failed.

I looked at Nick.

He saw my face.

“What is it?””

I kept reading.

I know you have discovered the truth about Daniel, Thomas, and Laura.

My hands shook.

But there is one truth nobody has told you.

I continued.

Your inheritance was never about money.

A chill moved through me.

The final sentence was underlined.

It was about proving who deserved to carry the Reed name.

I looked at the signature.

And my heart stopped.

May you like

Because the letter was signed:

*Your grandmother, Eleanor Reed.*
