Chapter 18: The Final Test

Eleanor Reed.

The name followed me all day.

My grandmother.

A woman I barely remembered.

A woman everyone seemed afraid of.

I read the letter again that night.

Then again.

The words felt impossible.

Emma,

If you have found this letter, it means the people around you have finally stopped protecting their own secrets.

Your father believed love mattered more than blood.

That is why he chose you.

But others disagreed.

I swallowed.

The letter continued.

The Reed family built everything through trust. Unfortunately, trust was the thing they broke most often.

I looked at the old photograph beside me.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man who loved me.

The man everyone kept turning into a mystery.

The letter had one more page.

There is a final document hidden where Daniel kept his most valuable possession.

I frowned.

Not money.

Not company records.

Possession.

The final line said:

Find the place where he first met you.

I stared.

Where he first met me?

My childhood home?

The hospital?

I didn’t know.

Then Thomas appeared at the doorway.

“How long have you been there?””

He smiled sadly.

“Long enough.””

I folded the letter.

“Did you know about this?””

“No.””

I studied his face.

“You’re sure?””

He nodded.

“Your grandmother never trusted me.””

I looked down.

“Maybe she had a reason.””

The words hurt him.

But he accepted them.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

“You don’t defend yourself?””

“I lost twenty-eight years with my daughter.””

He looked at me.

“I don’t get to pretend I did everything right.””

The honesty made something inside me soften.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something.

“Where did my father first meet me?””

Thomas smiled faintly.

“I know.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

“Your mother’s old apartment.””

The place I barely remembered.

The place where my childhood began.

We went there the next morning.

The building was old.

The paint was peeling.

But the moment I stepped inside, something felt familiar.

A smell.

A sound.

A memory.

Thomas walked toward a small closet.

“Daniel spent hours here.””

“Doing what?””

“He said this was where everything started.””

I opened the closet.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a loose wooden panel near the floor.

My heart started beating faster.

I removed it carefully.

Inside was a small metal box.

My hands shook.

Thomas whispered:

“That’s it.””

I opened it.

Inside was one final document.

A video recording.

And a letter.

The letter was from Daniel.

I unfolded it.

Emma,

If you are holding this, then you finally know the truth.

Tears filled my eyes.

I don’t know how old you are when you read this, but I hope you know one thing.

You were never an accident.

I pressed my hand to my mouth.

I chose you.

The sentence blurred.

Not because I had to.

Because I wanted to.

I closed my eyes.

The pain I carried for years slowly changed.

My father hadn’t left me.

He had chosen me.

Then I played the video.

Daniel appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

“Emma.””

I froze.

Hearing his voice was like hearing a ghost.

“If you’re watching this, then I’m gone.””

A tear fell.

“But you’re old enough to know the truth.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“Your grandmother created a test.””

My heart stopped.

“A test?””

Daniel continued.

“She wanted to know if the person who inherited everything would choose power or people.””

The video paused briefly.

Then he said:

“Emma, the inheritance belongs to you.””

A breath.

“But there is one condition.””

I leaned closer.

Daniel looked serious.

“You must decide whether to keep the Reed empire…”

May you like

He paused.

“Or destroy it forever.””
