Chapter 15: The Last Call From My Father

The room felt frozen.

My eyes stayed on Martha.

“Is it true?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Nick stepped away from her.

“Mom.””

Martha looked at him.

“I can explain.””

He shook his head.

“You always say that.””

A crash came from outside.

Richard was still there.

Still waiting.

Still holding pieces of my life.

But suddenly, I didn’t care about him.

Not yet.

Because Martha knew something about my father.

Something she had hidden for twenty-eight years.

“What did he say?””

Martha looked at me.

“Emma…”

“What did my father say?””

Her eyes filled.

And for the first time, I saw real fear.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of losing control.

Fear of remembering.

“He called me because he knew he was in danger.””

The room went silent.

Laura covered her mouth.

“You never told me.””

Martha looked at her.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Laura’s face hardened.

“You keep using those words.””

Martha looked down.

“Because I don’t know how else to explain what I did.””

I stepped closer.

“What happened during that call?””

Martha closed her eyes.

“He told me Richard was going to hurt him.””

My heart pounded.

“Then why didn’t you help him?””

The silence was unbearable.

Finally:

“Because I didn’t believe him.””

Nobody spoke.

Martha continued.

“Daniel had been accusing Richard for months. Everyone thought he was becoming paranoid.””

Laura whispered:

“He was right.””

“Yes.””

Martha looked at me.

“He was right.””

I felt anger rise.

“You could have saved him.””

Her face broke.

“I know.””

The confession was quiet.

But it destroyed her.

“You could have saved my father.””

“I know.””

“You could have told my mother.””

“I know.””

“You could have told me.””

Her tears finally fell.

“I know.””

For the first time, Martha looked like a person.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I saw the weight of what she had carried.

A terrible person could still regret terrible things.

But regret didn’t erase damage.

A loud bang came from downstairs.

Richard.

Nick moved toward the door.

“I’m calling the police.””

Before he could, the lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

Someone had cut the power.

Everyone froze.

Then came footsteps.

Inside the house.

Not outside.

Inside.

Nick grabbed my hand.

“Stay behind me.””

A flashlight appeared at the end of the hallway.

Richard stepped into view.

“I knew you would all gather here.””

Nick moved forward.

“How did you get out?””

Richard smiled.

“Money opens many doors.””

Martha stepped back.

“You said you wouldn’t come here.””

Richard looked at her.

“You said you would handle Emma.””

His eyes moved to me.

“But she’s still asking questions.””

I stared at him.

“You killed my father.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“I didn’t come here to discuss the past.””

“Then why?””

He held up a folder.

“Because I have something your father left behind.””

I didn’t move.

“What?””

Richard looked at Martha.

And she immediately looked terrified.

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“Yes.””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a single photograph.

A hospital bracelet.

And a document.

My name was written on it.

But underneath my name was another word.

*Adoption.*

I felt the room disappear.

Richard looked at me.

“Your father didn’t just leave you an inheritance.””

He stepped closer.

“He left you a question.””

I stared at the paper.

“What question?””

Richard smiled.

“Who are you really?””

And then Martha whispered the words that shattered everything:

“Emma…”

May you like

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Your father wasn’t your biological father.””
