Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in My Name
The room felt smaller after Nick said those words.
Like the walls had moved closer.
Like every person in that ballroom was waiting for my life to change.
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Nick looked down at the document again.
His hands were trembling.
Martha immediately stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
“No.””
The firmness in Nick’s voice shocked everyone.
Especially her.
For years, Martha had controlled every conversation.
Every family gathering.
Every decision.
But now her son was standing between her and the truth.
“Martha,” Nick said quietly, “what is this?””
She looked away.
“It’s nothing.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“You always say that.””
Martha turned toward her.
“Stay out of this.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I stayed out of it for twenty-eight years. Look where that got us.””
I looked at Nick.
“Please tell me what’s happening.””
He walked toward me slowly.
“I found this file in my mother’s office three months ago.””
My heart sank.
“A file about me?””
He nodded.
“I didn’t understand why she had it.””
Martha’s face tightened.
“Because I was protecting you.””
Nick looked disgusted.
“Protecting me from what?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence said more than any confession.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Your mother has always believed family means blood and money.””
She looked at me.
“But she never expected you to become part of her family.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Nick opened the folder.
Inside were copies of old records.
Birth certificates.
Letters.
Photographs.
My name appeared on the pages.
My hands went cold.
“No.””
Nick looked at me carefully.
“I’m sorry.””
I took a step back.
“What?””
Martha finally spoke.
“You should have listened to me.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked almost relieved.
Like she believed she had finally won.
“I knew this day would come.””
My voice shook.
“Knew what?””
She looked directly at me.
“You think I hated you because you were poor?””
The room was silent.
“You think I hated you because you weren’t good enough?””
She smiled bitterly.
“No.””
She pointed at the documents.
“I hated you because you walked into my family without knowing you were already connected to it.””
I felt dizzy.
I looked at Nick.
“Tell me she’s lying.””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was the worst part.
Finally, he whispered:
“She’s not.””
My knees almost gave out.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“What does that mean?””
Nick looked at the crowd.
Then at me.
“Your father…”
I held my breath.
“My father what?””
Nick looked at Martha.
And Martha looked terrified.
“Your father was…”
A loud crash interrupted him.
Everyone turned.
Martha had knocked over a champagne glass.
But she wasn’t looking at the broken pieces.
She was looking at the entrance.
Someone had just walked into the reception.
An older man stood there.
Gray hair.
A familiar expression.
And when he saw me, tears filled his eyes.
Martha whispered his name.
A name I had never heard before.
“Thomas.””
The man looked at me.
Then at the braid lying on the table.
Then back at Martha.
May you like
And he said four words that changed everything.
“You did it again.””
