Chapter 2: The Woman Martha Never Expected

The entire room watched Nick pick up the microphone.

Nobody whispered.

Nobody moved.

Even the photographers had stopped taking pictures.

Martha crossed her arms.

“You’re really doing this now?”” she asked.

Nick ignored her.

He looked at me.

Not his mother.

Me.

And somehow, that hurt more.

Because I saw regret in his eyes.

Regret that he had walked away.

Regret that he had let me stand there alone.

“Everyone,” Nick said into the microphone, his voice shaking slightly, “I’m sorry this happened tonight.””

Martha scoffed.

“Nick, don’t make this worse.””

He finally looked at her.

“Mom, you made it worse when you cut my wife’s hair.””

The room erupted with quiet gasps.

Wife.

Not girlfriend.

Not “the woman I love.””

Wife.

Martha’s expression hardened.

“I was trying to teach her something.””

Nick stared at her.

“What exactly?””

“That traditions matter.””

He shook his head.

“No. You were trying to remind her that you’re in control.””

Martha’s face changed.

For the first time all night, she looked uncertain.

Nick turned back toward the entrance.

“I invited a special guest tonight.””

The double doors opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Older than me.

Elegant.

Confident.

She wore a navy dress and carried a small black handbag.

Martha’s face went completely white.

“No,” she whispered.

The woman walked slowly into the room.

Everyone recognized that something was wrong.

But nobody knew why.

Nick handed her the microphone.

“Everyone, this is Evelyn Whitmore.””

Martha’s fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“Nick, stop.””

But he didn’t.

Evelyn looked around the room.

Then her eyes landed on me.

“I’m sorry we’re meeting under these circumstances,” she said.

I wiped my tears.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Martha.

Then back at me.

“I’m Martha’s older sister.””

The room became silent again.

Martha stepped forward.

“You have no right to be here.””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“That’s exactly what you told me twenty-eight years ago.””

A murmur spread through the guests.

I looked at Nick.

“What is happening?””

He walked toward me.

“I should have told you sooner.””

My heart sank.

Those were never comforting words.

Not in any situation.

“What should you have told me?””

Nick swallowed.

“That my mother has done this before.””

Martha’s expression changed instantly.

“Nick.””

“No,” he said.

“Not this time.””

Evelyn opened her handbag.

She pulled out an old photograph.

A wedding photograph.

She handed it to Nick.

He turned it around so everyone could see.

The picture showed a young woman standing in a wedding dress.

Her hair had been cut short.

Just like mine.

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Who is she?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She was my daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

The photograph shook slightly in Nick’s hand.

“Martha did the same thing to her,” Evelyn continued.

“Twenty-eight years ago.””

Martha’s voice rose.

“That was different.””

“How?”” Evelyn asked.

“You ruined my wedding,” Martha snapped.

Evelyn stared at her.

“No. I exposed what you did.””

I looked at Nick.

“You knew?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“I found out last year.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew your mother had done something like this before, and you still let me stand next to her?””

Nick looked devastated.

“I thought she had changed.””

I laughed quietly, but there was no humor in it.

“You thought?””

Martha stepped toward me.

“Don’t let them fill your head with lies.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You always say that when the truth arrives.””

Martha’s jaw clenched.

Then she pointed at Evelyn.

“She has always hated me.””

Evelyn’s expression didn’t change.

“No, Martha. I loved you.””

A pause.

“Until I realized what you were capable of.””

The room fell silent.

Then Evelyn reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a folded document.

Nick saw it and immediately looked shocked.

“What is that?””

Evelyn handed it to him.

“I think your wife deserves to know why your mother was so desperate to stop this wedding.””

I watched Nick unfold the paper.

His face changed as he read.

The color drained from his cheeks.

“What?”” I whispered.

Nick looked at me.

Then at Martha.

And the next words out of his mouth made everyone in the room freeze.

“Mom… you didn’t just cut her hair because you hated her.””

May you like

He held up the document.

“You did this because you knew who she really was.””
