Chapter 13: The Money That Was Never Hers
The attorney’s words echoed through the room.
“Martha Whitmore.””
I stared at the phone.
“That’s impossible.””
Laura looked at me.
“Emma?””
I barely heard her.
My entire body felt numb.
Martha had spent years telling me I was dangerous because of money.
She had convinced me wealth was something that would destroy my life.
And now she had taken it.
Again.
Nick stood.
“Who is this?””
I put the phone on speaker.
The man answered.
“My name is Jonathan Pierce. I represented Daniel Reed when he created the trust.””
Nick moved closer.
“What do you mean Martha accessed the inheritance?””
Jonathan sighed.
“The trust was designed with several protections. It required Emma’s identity confirmation and approval.””
“That’s what you said,” I replied.
“So how did she get it?””
A pause.
“That is what we are trying to determine.””
Laura looked terrified.
“She found a way.””
Jonathan continued.
“She accessed a temporary account connected to the trust.””
My hands tightened.
“Temporary?””
“Yes. An emergency account Daniel created for legal expenses and protection.””
“How much?””
Silence.
Then:
“Almost two million dollars.””
Nobody spoke.
Martha had taken money before.
But hearing the amount made it real.
She hadn’t just hidden my inheritance.
She had taken what belonged to me.
Nick looked sick.
“She stole from her.””
Jonathan answered carefully.
“If the account was accessed without authorization, yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The woman who cut my hair at my wedding.
The woman who smiled while I cried.
The woman who told me I wasn’t good enough.
She had been taking pieces of my life for years.
And I didn’t even know.
“We need to find her,” I said.
Nick looked at me.
“I know where she might be.””
Everyone turned.
“Where?””
He hesitated.
“My mother has a house outside the city.””
Laura frowned.
“Why would she go there?””
“Because she keeps things there.””
“What things?””
Nick looked at me.
“Secrets.””
We arrived an hour later.
The house was exactly what I expected from Martha.
Perfect.
Expensive.
Cold.
Every flower arranged.
Every picture carefully placed.
Like someone had spent years creating the image of a happy family.
But underneath it was rot.
Nick unlocked the door.
“She always came here when she wanted to think.””
I walked inside.
The air smelled like old books and expensive perfume.
Laura stayed close beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For bringing you into this.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t create this.””
She looked down.
“No.””
A painful silence passed.
“But I couldn’t stop it.””
Before I could answer, Nick called from upstairs.
“Emma.””
Something about his voice made us run.
We found him standing inside a bedroom.
Not a normal bedroom.
A room filled with files.
Photographs.
Documents.
My entire life was organized on the walls.
My childhood.
My school records.
My jobs.
My relationship with Nick.
My wedding plans.
I felt sick.
“She was watching me.””
Nick looked horrified.
“She was studying you.””
Laura picked up a file.
Her hands started shaking.
“What?””
I walked toward her.
“What is it?””
She handed me the paper.
It was an old report.
A hospital record.
My birth record.
But attached to it was a note.
Written by Martha.
If she ever learns the truth, she will destroy everything.
I stared at the sentence.
“She thought I would destroy everything?””
Nick looked around the room.
“No.””
He pointed at the walls.
“She thought you would take everything back.””
A sound came from downstairs.
A door closing.
We froze.
Nick whispered:
“Someone’s here.””
Footsteps moved across the floor.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone who wasn’t afraid of being caught.
Nick moved toward the hallway.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
I followed him.
Because I was done hiding.
We reached the staircase.
And there she was.
Martha.
Holding a suitcase.
She stopped when she saw us.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she looked at me.
Not Nick.
Me.
“You were never supposed to find this room.””
My voice was calm.
“How long?””
Her expression changed.
“How long what?””
“How long did you plan this?””
Martha looked tired.
Not sorry.
“Twelve years.””
The answer stunned me.
“Twelve?””
“Yes.””
Nick stepped forward.
“You planned this for twelve years?””
Martha looked at him.
“I planned to protect you.””
He laughed.
“You still believe that?””
Her eyes moved back to me.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” I said.
“I understand perfectly.””
She gripped the suitcase.
“You think I’m the villain because you found a few papers.””
I looked at the walls.
“A few papers?””
I pointed.
“You built an entire life around controlling me.””
Martha’s face hardened.
Then she said something I never expected.
“I was trying to stop your father’s mistake.””
My heart stopped.
“What mistake?””
She looked at me.
“The reason he died.””
The room went silent.
“What are you talking about?””
Martha opened the suitcase.
Inside was a folder.
She pulled out a photograph.
And handed it to me.
It showed my father.
Standing beside a woman.
A woman who wasn’t my mother.
May you like
Martha whispered:
“Your father was keeping a secret too.””
