Chapter 10: The Recording That Exposed Them
The first sound that came from the speakers was Martha’s voice.
Quiet.
Controlled.
Almost calm.
“I don’t want her hurt.””
The entire ballroom froze.
Every guest turned toward the speakers mounted above the dance floor.
Richard’s face changed instantly.
“What did you do?””
Evelyn held up the small recorder.
“Something you should have expected from people who spent years collecting the truth.””
The recording continued.
Richard’s voice followed.
“You’re getting emotional again, Martha.””
“I’m being practical.””
“You’re afraid.””
“I’m protecting my son.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Even after everything.
Even after being exposed.
She was still making it about Nick.
The recording continued.
“You promised me Emma would never find out.””
Richard laughed.
“She was always going to find out eventually.””
“Not if you handled it.””
“You asked me to scare her away.””
“I asked you to make sure she left.””
“And if she didn’t?””
A pause.
A long one.
Then Martha’s voice.
“She always chooses love over money.””
My stomach tightened.
Richard answered.
“Then maybe we remind her what happens to people who chase things they don’t understand.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody breathed.
Martha looked around the room.
“I didn’t mean that.””
Nick stared at her.
“What exactly did you mean?””
She looked at him.
“I was desperate.””
“For what?””
Her face crumbled slightly.
“For you.””
Nick shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“Don’t do that.””
Martha looked confused.
“Do what?””
“Make this about me.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
Because Nick had spent his entire life protecting her.
And now he finally saw what everyone else saw.
“She hurt Emma because of her inheritance.””
Martha shook her head.
“No.””
“She lied to me because she wanted control.””
“No.””
“She brought a dangerous man into our lives.””
“I was trying to fix things.””
Nick laughed bitterly.
“Fix things?””
He pointed toward me.
“You destroyed her wedding.””
Martha looked at my hair.
The anger in her face disappeared for one second.
And I saw something else.
Regret.
But it was too late.
I had spent years hoping for her approval.
Tonight, I finally understood I never needed it.
Richard suddenly moved toward the exit.
Thomas blocked his path.
“You’re not going anywhere.””
Richard smiled.
“You think this little recording changes anything?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“But the police report might.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“What?””
She held up another folder.
“The one Daniel prepared before he died.””
My heart stopped.
“Daniel knew?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He knew Richard was stealing from him.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“He was paranoid.””
“No,” Thomas said.
“He was careful.””
Nick looked at the folder.
“What’s inside?””
Evelyn opened it.
“Financial records. Emails. Copies of transactions.””
She looked at Richard.
“Proof.””
Richard’s face became cold.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Evelyn smiled.
“We understand perfectly.””
The doors opened.
Two police officers entered.
The room erupted in whispers.
Richard stared at Martha.
“You said nobody had anything.””
Martha looked horrified.
“You told me everything was gone.””
The officers walked toward Richard.
“You need to come with us.””
He didn’t fight.
He didn’t yell.
He simply looked at me.
And that frightened me more.
Because there was no anger in his eyes.
Only calculation.
As he passed me, he whispered:
“You still don’t know the worst part.””
I froze.
“What?””
He smiled.
“Ask your mother why she never came back.””
Then he was gone.
The ballroom slowly emptied.
But I couldn’t move.
Because after everything I learned tonight…
May you like
One question remained.
Why didn’t my mother return for me?
