Chapter 16: The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
My entire life had already been turned upside down.
My mother hadn’t abandoned me.
My father hadn’t left me.
My mother-in-law had stolen from me.
A man I trusted had helped destroy my family.
How much more could one person survive?
And now Richard was standing in front of me, holding a piece of paper that claimed my father wasn’t my father.
I looked at Martha.
“Say it again.””
She looked devastated.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Say it.””
Martha closed her eyes.
“Daniel wasn’t your biological father.””
The room went silent.
Laura looked at her.
“You knew?””
Martha looked at the floor.
“I suspected.””
I turned toward my mother.
She was crying.
But she wasn’t denying it.
That hurt the most.
“You knew too?””
Laura took a step toward me.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She stopped.
I laughed softly.
“Everyone always says that.””
Nick looked between us.
“Emma…”
I raised my hand.
Not because I was angry at him.
Because I couldn’t handle another explanation.
Richard watched us with satisfaction.
“This is what happens when people hide the truth.””
I looked at him.
“You’re enjoying this.””
He smiled.
“Because I know what your father did.””
“What did he do?””
Richard opened the folder.
“Daniel took you in because he loved your mother.””
Laura looked at him with disgust.
“Don’t pretend you know anything about love.””
Richard ignored her.
“But he knew you weren’t his child.””
My heart felt like it was breaking apart.
“Then why did he raise me?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, Laura whispered:
“Because he chose you.””
The words stopped me.
She stepped closer.
“Emma, listen to me.””
I couldn’t look away.
“Daniel knew before you were born.””
“Knew what?””
“That your biological father was gone.””
My chest tightened.
“Gone?””
Laura nodded.
“He died before you were born.””
Richard interrupted.
“And Daniel covered it up.””
Laura turned toward him.
“He protected her.””
Richard laughed.
“No. He protected his reputation.””
I looked at the documents.
“Who was my father?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Martha whispered:
“Thomas.””
The name hit the room.
I looked toward the hallway.
Thomas stood there.
His face had gone pale.
“What?””
Everyone turned.
Thomas looked at me.
And I knew.
I knew before he spoke.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Martha looked at him.
“You knew.””
Thomas shook his head.
“I knew Laura was pregnant.””
My heart stopped.
“But I thought…”
He looked at me.
“I thought Daniel was raising you.””
Laura covered her face.
“I was afraid.””
Thomas looked shattered.
“You never told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After you disappeared.””
The room became a storm of broken secrets.
I looked at Thomas.
“You’re my father?””
He couldn’t answer.
Not immediately.
Because saying it would make it real.
Finally, he whispered:
“Yes.””
One word.
One word that changed everything.
I had spent my whole life searching for someone who left.
And now I had found someone who had been searching for me.
Thomas took a step forward.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to be angry.
I wanted to scream.
But I couldn’t.
Because his face didn’t show guilt.
It showed grief.
The grief of someone who had lost twenty-eight years.
Richard suddenly laughed.
“This is beautiful.””
Everyone looked at him.
“A family destroyed by secrets.””
Nick stepped forward.
“You’re done.””
Richard smiled.
“Am I?””
He held up another document.
“There’s still one thing you don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked at Thomas.
“Your father wasn’t the only one who knew about Emma.””
Thomas’s face changed.
Richard smiled.
“Someone else knew too.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Richard looked directly at Martha.
And Martha whispered:
“No.””
Richard answered.
“Your grandmother.””
The room went silent.
My grandmother.
A woman I barely remembered.
“What does she have to do with this?””
Richard folded the paper.
“Everything.””
May you like
Then he walked backward toward the door.
“Because she was the one who paid me to find you.””
