Chapter 12: The Woman Who Never Gave Up

Her name was Laura.

My mother.

The woman I had spent my entire life imagining.

But the reality was different.

She wasn’t perfect.

She wasn’t some magical answer to every question.

She was just a woman who looked exhausted from carrying too much pain.

We sat at the kitchen table until sunrise.

Nobody wanted to leave.

Nobody wanted to miss a single word.

“I need to hear everything,” I said.

Laura nodded.

“I know.””

Her hands wrapped around a cup of coffee she never drank.

“When you were born, Daniel and I were terrified.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard knew about the company.””

She looked at Nick.

“He knew about the trust.””

Nick frowned.

“What did he want?””

“Control.””

Laura looked back at me.

“Your father discovered he had been moving money out of the company.””

“Why didn’t he fire him?””

“He tried.””

She looked down.

“That’s when things changed.””

The room became quiet.

“Richard threatened Daniel.””

“How?””

“He threatened you.””

My heart tightened.

“Me?””

Laura nodded.

“He told us if we fought him, he would make sure Emma disappeared.””

A chill ran through me.

“So you left me with Martha?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I looked away.

The words hurt.

Even though I understood.

“I was supposed to return within weeks.””

“What happened?””

“Martha changed everything.””

Nick clenched his jaw.

“She told you Emma was safe?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed her?””

Laura looked at him.

“She was my sister.””

The answer was simple.

And painful.

Family was supposed to be where you were safest.

Sometimes it was where you were most vulnerable.

Laura continued.

“When I came back, the house was empty.””

My heart sank.

“She moved?””

“Yes.””

“She hid me.””

Laura nodded.

“She changed your records. Your school information. Everything.””

I felt sick.

“My whole life.””

“I know.””

She reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

I let her hold it.

Because for the first time, I believed her apology.

Not because it fixed the past.

Because it carried the weight of someone who regretted it.

Nick looked at Laura.

“What about the inheritance?””

Laura took a deep breath.

“Daniel created a condition.””

“What condition?””

She looked at me.

“He knew people might try to control you.””

I frowned.

“So?””

“He left everything locked until you found the truth.””

I blinked.

“What?””

Laura nodded.

“The inheritance was never controlled by Martha.””

Nick looked shocked.

“Then who controlled it?””

Laura looked at me.

“Your father’s attorney.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel knew Martha might betray him.””

A silence followed.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Emma Reed?””

My stomach tightened.

“Yes?””

“This is Daniel Reed’s attorney.””

I stood.

“Why are you calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because we have been waiting for you to confirm your identity.””

I looked at Laura.

“At last.””

The man continued.

“There is one problem.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What problem?””

His voice became quieter.

“The inheritance was accessed yesterday.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“That should have been impossible.””

“Who accessed it?””

Silence.

Then he answered.

And the name he said made everyone in the room go still.

“Martha Whitmore.””
