Chapter 8: The Bracelet That Changed Everything

The next morning, I drove to the hospital where Nia was born.

Nobody spoke during the entire drive.

Not even Vanessa.

She sat beside me with her hands folded in her lap, staring out the window.

For years, I had thought silence between us meant peace.

Now I realized silence could also hide a disaster.

Ethan followed separately.

Diane stayed home with Ava.

I didn’t trust her.

Not anymore.

When we arrived, Vanessa led us through the old maternity wing.

The hallway looked different from the memories.

The paint had changed.

The furniture had changed.

But Vanessa hadn’t.

She walked like someone returning to the place where her life split into two pieces.

“Where is it?”” I asked.

She stopped.

“Storage.””

We found the hospital records department.

After some discussion, the staff member brought out an old archive box.

Vanessa’s hands shook.

The box contained papers, photographs, and old documents.

Then she found it.

A tiny plastic bracelet.

Pink.

Faded.

The name written on it was almost impossible to read.

Nia Hale.

I stared at it.

“That’s it?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I kept it hidden.””

“Why?””

She looked at the bracelet.

“Because there was another one.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She pulled out a second bracelet.

The same color.

The same hospital.

Different name.

Daniel’s daughter.

No.

Not Daniel’s daughter.

Daniel’s name wasn’t on it.

Another name was.

I read it.

My blood turned cold.

“Olivia?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was given the wrong bracelet.””

The room spun.

“What are you saying?””

She started crying.

“The hospital made a mistake. Two babies were placed in the wrong bassinets.””

I stared at her.

“Nia…”

“She was always ours.””

The relief should have come instantly.

But it didn’t.

Because there was still something wrong.

“Then why did Daniel think otherwise?””

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Because someone told him.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan pulled out his phone.

“I found something.””

He showed me a message.

A conversation between Daniel and someone saved as “V.””

*You need to come back. Marcus cannot know the truth.*

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

“What is this?””

She looked shocked.

“I didn’t send that.””

Ethan scrolled.

More messages.

More threats.

More instructions.

Someone had been using Vanessa’s name.

Someone had been manipulating everyone.

Then another message appeared.

*The child is the only leverage we have left.*

My hands went cold.

“The child.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Nia.””

She nodded.

Someone had been using my daughter.

Not because they hated her.

Because they needed something from us.

We returned home immediately.

The moment we walked inside, I knew something was wrong.

The front door was unlocked.

I never left it unlocked.

“Stay behind me.””

I walked through the house.

The living room was destroyed.

Papers everywhere.

Drawers pulled open.

Someone had searched the place.

“Dad!””

I ran upstairs.

Nia and Ava were standing in their bedroom.

Ava was crying.

“What happened?””

Nia pointed toward the closet.

“He was here.””

My entire body went cold.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“The man from the picture.””

Daniel.

I checked every room.

Empty.

But on Nia’s bed was something that hadn’t been there before.

A small envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Vanessa.

Holding a newborn baby.

On the back was a message.

*You’re looking for the wrong secret.*

I turned it over.

May you like

There was another line underneath.

*Ask your wife what happened to the other child.*
