Chapter 18: The Father I Never Knew
The room went silent.
The man standing in front of me looked like a ghost.
Same eyes.
Same face shape.
Same voice.
But something was different.
My father had always carried himself like he owned every room he entered.
This man looked like someone who had spent years running from one.
“I know what you’re thinking,” he said.
I stared.
“You’re not William.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who are you?””
He took a breath.
“Michael Hale.””
The name felt strange.
Impossible.
“My father’s twin.””
He nodded.
“I’m your father.””
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted to scream.
But every secret we had uncovered pointed to this moment.
The fake death.
The hidden records.
The DNA report.
My mother’s letters.
“You knew?””
Michael looked down.
“Yes.””
“You knew I grew up believing William was my father?””
“Yes.””
My anger exploded.
“Then where were you?””
His face broke.
“Trying to keep you alive.””
Nobody spoke.
I stepped closer.
“My entire life was a lie.””
“I know.””
“My mother died thinking I would never know the truth.””
“I know.””
“You let me call another man my father.””
His eyes filled.
“I had no choice.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
Michael accepted the anger.
“I was arrested.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“William framed me.””
“For what?””
“For crimes he committed.””
The room became quiet.
“He used my identity.””
Michael looked at Claire.
“She knows.””
Claire nodded.
“He destroyed Michael’s reputation.””
Michael continued.
“By the time I was free, William had built a new life.””
“My life.””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
All those memories.
Birthday parties.
School events.
Business lessons.
Were they all stolen?
“Why come now?””
Michael looked at the sleeping area upstairs.
“Because he’s coming for you.””
My chest tightened.
“William?””
Michael nodded.
“He was never dead.””
“We know.””
“No.””
Michael’s expression changed.
“You don’t understand.””
He stepped closer.
“The man you knew as William was never just hiding.””
“What does that mean?””
“He has been preparing for years.””
“For what?””
Michael looked at me.
“To take everything.””
The room felt colder.
“The company?””
“No.””
He looked upstairs.
“The family.””
I felt rage.
“He already hurt enough people.””
Michael nodded.
“And he will hurt more.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Why?””
Michael looked at her.
“Because Marcus is the one thing he could never control.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You.””
I shook my head.
“I worked for him.””
“You challenged him.””
Memories surfaced.
Arguments with my father.
Times I refused to cut corners.
Times he called me weak.
“He hated that.””
Michael sighed.
“William built his empire by removing anyone who stood against him.””
“And my mother?””
Michael looked down.
“She was the first person who tried.””
The room went quiet.
Then Nia appeared at the stairs.
Everyone froze.
“Dad?””
I immediately walked toward her.
“You should be sleeping.””
She looked at Michael.
“Who is he?””
I didn’t know how to answer.
How do you explain that your entire family history is a mystery?
“This is someone who can help us.””
Nia studied him.
Then asked:
“Are you another person who is going to leave?””
The question destroyed the room.
Michael looked at her.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I’m not.””
Nia nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
Then she went back upstairs.
Michael watched her leave.
“She’s like your mother.””
I looked at him.
“You knew her?””
“Only through stories.””
A strange silence followed.
Then Ethan rushed into the room.
“We have a problem.””
Everyone turned.
“What now?””
He held up his phone.
“The video was fake.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The broadcast from William.””
He showed us the screen.
“The footage was recorded years ago.””
My heart stopped.
“Then how did he know?””
Ethan looked at Michael.
“He didn’t.””
A pause.
“Someone else sent it.””
I looked at Claire.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan showed another message.
A message sent minutes ago.
From William’s account.
The words were simple.
*You found my brother. Good.*
Then another message appeared.
*Now bring me my son.*
I stared at the screen.
My blood turned cold.
Because the final message wasn’t addressed to me.
May you like
It was addressed to Michael.
*Or I’ll take your daughter instead.*
