Chapter 19: The Final Trap

The message stayed on the screen.

Or I’ll take your daughter instead.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the meaning.

Michael had a daughter.

And William knew exactly where to hurt him.

I looked at Michael.

“Who is she?””

His face had lost all color.

“My daughter.””

Another secret.

Another hidden piece of a life I never knew existed.

“Where is she?””

Michael looked away.

“She’s safe.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

He closed his eyes.

“She lives with her mother.””

Claire stepped forward.

“William knows.””

Michael nodded.

“How?””

“Because he knows everything.””

The anger inside me was almost impossible to control.

For years, William had treated people like pieces on a chessboard.

My mother.

Michael.

Vanessa.

Lily.

Nia.

Everyone was just a move.

Everyone except him.

I looked at Michael.

“Where is William?””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out an old photograph.

A location was written on the back.

An abandoned office building.

The original headquarters of my father’s company.

The place where everything started.

“He wants me to go there.””

Claire shook her head.

“It’s a trap.””

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“Then why go?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because if I don’t, he’ll keep coming after everyone we love.””

I thought about Nia.

The fear in her eyes.

The way she had asked if she was still my daughter.

I thought about Lily.

Eighteen years stolen.

I thought about Vanessa.

A woman who had made terrible choices but had spent the night finally facing them.

No more running.

No more secrets.

“I’m coming with you.””

Michael immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Marcus—”

“You spent my entire life protecting me from the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“Now I’m protecting my family.””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Please be careful.””

I looked at her.

There were still wounds between us.

Maybe there always would be.

But she was the mother of my children.

And for the first time in a long time, we were standing on the same side.

“I’ll come back.””

She nodded.

“Come back to us.””

Michael and I drove to the old headquarters before sunrise.

The building looked exactly like a grave.

Broken windows.

Empty halls.

Dust covering everything my father had built.

We entered slowly.

A light turned on.

Then another.

A voice came through the speakers.

“Marcus.””

I stopped.

William.

“You finally came.””

I looked around.

“Show yourself.””

A laugh echoed.

“You sound like me.””

“I’m nothing like you.””

A pause.

Then:

“That’s why I lost.””

Michael looked at me.

The voice continued.

“I spent my entire life building power.””

Footsteps sounded somewhere above us.

“But you built something I never understood.””

A figure appeared on the balcony.

Older.

But unmistakable.

William Hale.

Alive.

I stared at him.

“You ruined people’s lives.””

He looked almost disappointed.

“I protected my legacy.””

“You destroyed your family.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I created you.””

The words made my blood boil.

“You don’t get credit for my life.””

William smiled.

“Don’t I?””

He walked down slowly.

“Everything you are came from me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Everything I am came from the people you hurt.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw anger.

“You sound exactly like your mother.””

That stopped me.

“My mother?””

“She was always difficult.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Leave her out of this.””

William looked at his brother.

“You always were weak.””

Michael didn’t react.

“You loved people.””

William smiled.

“And that’s why you lost.””

Then alarms suddenly started ringing.

The building doors locked.

I turned.

“What did you do?””

William looked at me.

“Insurance.””

The screens around us turned on.

Documents appeared.

Videos.

Records.

Everything.

“Tonight, the world learns the truth.””

I stared.

“What truth?””

William smiled.

“The truth about who really owns the Hale empire.””

I looked at the screens.

My name.

Michael’s name.

My mother’s name.

Then one final document appeared.

A legal transfer agreement.

Signed years ago.

I read the first line.

And my heart stopped.

Because it said:

*In the event of William Hale’s death, ownership transfers to his biological heir.*

I looked at him.

“You planned this.””

William smiled.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked directly at me.

“Because you were never supposed to be my son.””

The room went silent.

Then the screens changed.

A DNA report appeared.

William pointed at it.

“Now everyone will know.””

I stared.

The result was visible.

A truth I had spent my entire life chasing.

And then William said:

“Your real father isn’t Michael.””

My breath caught.

The report loaded.

And the name appeared.

The final secret.

May you like

The one nobody expected.

My real father was…
