Chapter 16: The Brother My Mother Never Mentioned

The location was an old farmhouse two hours outside the city.

A place I had never seen.

A place nobody in my family had ever mentioned.

But the name on the message stayed in my mind.

Your mother’s brother.

I had spent my entire life believing my mother was an only child.

That was what my father told me.

That was what every family record showed.

Yet another stranger was waiting to tell me that my entire childhood was built on another lie.

I drove there alone.

Vanessa wanted to come.

I told her no.

Not because I hated her.

Because I needed one truth that wasn’t connected to everyone else’s secrets.

When I arrived, an older man was standing outside.

He looked at my car before looking at me.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“You look just like her.””

My throat tightened.

“Who are you?””

He stepped forward.

“My name is Robert Hayes.””

He took a breath.

“I’m your mother’s brother.””

Hearing it from his mouth made it real.

I followed him inside.

The farmhouse was simple.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Family pictures.

A life I had never known existed.

Then I saw her.

My mother.

Young.

Smiling.

Standing beside Robert.

I touched the photograph.

“Why didn’t I know about you?””

Robert looked away.

“Because your father made sure you wouldn’t.””

I turned.

“Again with my father.””

Robert nodded.

“Your father erased anyone who could challenge him.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother knew the truth.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“The truth about what?””

Robert walked to a cabinet and pulled out a box.

Inside were letters.

Documents.

Photographs.

“I kept these because I knew someday you would come looking.””

I opened the first letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

My hands shook.

Dear Robert,

If anything happens to me, please protect Marcus. He cannot know yet. His father will use him.

I stopped.

My father.

Again.

I read more.

William has built everything on lies. He thinks money can erase anything. He thinks nobody will ever discover what happened.

I looked up.

“William.””

My father’s name.

Robert nodded.

“Your father wasn’t the man everyone believed.””

“What did he do?””

Robert looked at the floor.

“He destroyed your mother’s family.””

“How?””

“Before you were born, your mother discovered financial crimes inside his company.””

I frowned.

“My father was a businessman.””

“He was a criminal.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

Robert continued.

“She wanted to expose him.””

“And?””

“He threatened her.””

My hands tightened.

“He threatened his own wife?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Then Robert handed me another document.

A DNA report.

I stared at it.

“What is this?””

“Your mother had doubts.””

I looked at the page.

The names were partially hidden.

But one thing was clear.

A test had been done.

Before I could read more, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“Marcus?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Something happened.””

“What?””

“Claire disappeared.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean disappeared?””

“She left the house.””

“Did she say why?””

“No.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“She left a message.””

“What message?””

Her voice became quieter.

“She said she found out who leaked the video.””

I stood.

“Who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then:

“Your father’s assistant.””

I froze.

“Claire?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Someone else.””

“Who?””

The answer came.

“Your father.””

I looked at Robert.

The room suddenly felt colder.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I couldn’t accept it.

“My father is dead.””

Robert stared at me.

And then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Your father was never the man who died.””

I slowly turned toward him.

“What?””

Robert looked at the old photograph of my mother.

“William Hale had a twin brother.””

The world went silent.

A twin.

Another person.

Another hidden life.

Another secret.

My phone buzzed again.

A message.

From Claire.

*I know who your father really was.*

May you like

Then another.

*And I know where he is.*
