Chapter 13: The Price of the Secret
The folder landed on the table with a soft sound.
But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
I stared at Claire.
The woman who had organized my meetings.
The woman who knew when my daughters had dentist appointments.
The woman who sent me birthday reminders for my own family.
The woman I trusted.
“You’re saying my father paid Vanessa?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
She looked at Lily.
Then at Nia’s picture on my phone screen.
Then back at me.
“Yes.””
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“No.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“You know I’m telling the truth.””
“I was young.””
“You were scared.””
“I was manipulated.””
I looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Claire opened the folder.
Inside were bank records.
Old emails.
Photographs.
Documents from eighteen years ago.
“I spent years trying to expose what happened,” Claire said.
I looked at her.
“You stalked my family.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“I watched because nobody believed me.””
“You hurt my daughter.””
Her face changed.
“I know.””
That answer surprised me.
No excuse.
No denial.
Just guilt.
“I was wrong.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that after destroying something.””
Claire looked down.
“But I never wanted Nia hurt.””
My jaw tightened.
“Then why did it happen?””
She pushed one document toward me.
“Because your father was covering up something bigger.””
I picked it up.
It was a payment record.
The sender was my father’s company.
The receiver was Vanessa.
The date was one week after Lily was born.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Explain.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t know what it was.””
“Then why did you take it?””
She looked away.
“Because my mother told me it was help.””
Diane.
Again.
Always Diane.
I turned toward the older woman.
“What did you do?””
Diane looked broken.
“I thought I was saving my daughter.””
“You keep saying that.””
Her shoulders fell.
“I was told Marcus’s father would ruin us if we refused.””
I froze.
“My father threatened you?””
Diane nodded.
“He knew about Lily.””
Vanessa whispered:
“He knew she existed.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Your father discovered Lily’s birth before anyone else.””
“Why?””
“Because he was investigating Vanessa.””
I frowned.
“Why would he care?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because he knew Daniel.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Your father and I worked together.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Years ago.””
He took a breath.
“He knew I was Lily’s biological father.””
Everything stopped.
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn’t deny it.
My chest tightened.
“Nia.””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“Marcus, listen.””
I stepped back.
“Lily was Daniel’s child.””
“Yes.””
“And Nia?””
“She is yours.””
The answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
“How do I know?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Because after Lily disappeared, I found out I was pregnant.””
I looked at her.
“Nia.””
She nodded.
“I was afraid to tell you anything.””
“Because?””
“Because your father threatened me.””
I looked at Claire.
She nodded.
“He knew if Marcus learned about Lily, he would start asking questions.””
“What questions?””
Claire looked at the papers.
“Questions about your father’s company.””
The pieces began fitting together.
My father wasn’t protecting Vanessa.
He was protecting himself.
“He paid her to stay quiet.””
“Yes.””
“And Lily?””
Claire’s expression changed.
“She was collateral.””
The word made me sick.
A child.
A baby.
A person.
Collateral.
I walked away from the table.
For years, I had thought my family was destroyed by one person’s cruelty.
But it wasn’t one person.
It was a chain of fear.
Secrets.
People choosing themselves.
Then my phone rang.
Ava.
I answered immediately.
“Sweetheart?””
Her voice shook.
“Dad.””
I stood straighter.
“What happened?””
“I was looking for something upstairs.””
“What?””
“Grandma’s old bag.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
“Because I found a letter.””
I looked at everyone.
“What letter?””
Ava’s voice became quieter.
“It has your grandfather’s handwriting.””
Silence.
Then she said:
“And Dad…”
“What?””
“It says he knew about Nia too.””
I looked at Vanessa.
The room suddenly felt colder.
“How?””
Ava swallowed.
“Because the letter says…”
May you like
A pause.
“Because the letter says Nia was never supposed to survive.””
