Chapter 17: The Twin Behind the Mask
I read Claire’s message ten times.
My brain refused to process it.
My father had a twin.
A twin nobody knew about.
A twin who might be alive.
A twin who might have been the person I buried.
I looked at Robert.
“You knew?””
He nodded slowly.
“My mother knew too.””
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
“Because your father made sure nobody could.””
I felt anger rising.
“All these years…”
Robert looked at me.
“You were a child.””
“That doesn’t excuse it.””
“No.””
He sighed.
“But it explains why.””
I returned home before midnight.
Everyone was waiting.
Vanessa.
Nia.
Ava.
Daniel.
Ethan.
Claire was missing.
And somehow, despite everything, seeing my daughters made me remember what mattered.
I walked straight to Nia.
She hugged me.
“Did you find out?””
I held her.
“Not everything.””
She looked worried.
“But you will?””
I nodded.
“I will.””
Later, after the girls slept, we gathered in the living room.
I placed the documents on the table.
“My father had a twin brother.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel was the first.
“That’s impossible.””
“Apparently not.””
Claire’s message was still on my phone.
“She says she knows where he is.””
Ethan looked concerned.
“Do we trust her?””
“No.””
I looked at the empty chair where Claire had been sitting.
“But we need the truth.””
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Claire walked inside.
She looked exhausted.
Her clothes were dirty.
Her face was pale.
“Where were you?””
I stood.
She looked at me.
“I found him.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Claire swallowed.
“Your father.””
Nobody moved.
“Where?””
She placed a small device on the table.
A recording.
“He wanted me to bring this to you.””
I stared.
“Why would he trust you?””
“He doesn’t.””
She looked down.
“He knows I hate him.””
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
My father.
“If Marcus is hearing this, then my brother failed.””
My blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
“I know you believe I’m dead.””
A pause.
“But death is just another business decision.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
The voice continued.
“My brother was always weaker than me.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked sick.
“My brother loved people. That was his weakness.””
The recording continued.
“I loved control.””
The words sounded exactly like him.
“Marcus, you have spent your life believing you inherited my company.””
A pause.
“You didn’t.””
I leaned closer.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“You inherited my brother’s life.””
The room froze.
I felt dizzy.
My father’s voice continued.
“Your real father was never William Hale.””
Nobody spoke.
The recording ended.
I stared at the device.
No.
No.
I looked at Robert’s documents.
The DNA report.
The hidden records.
Everything.
My entire identity was collapsing.
Vanessa grabbed my hand.
“Marcus…”
I pulled away.
Not from her.
From the truth.
“My father wasn’t my father.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Then Claire spoke.
“Your mother knew.””
I looked at her.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she never tell me?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Because she was protecting you.””
“From who?””
Claire looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“From the man who raised you.””
A car engine suddenly sounded outside.
Everyone froze.
The lights from a vehicle swept across the living room.
Someone had arrived.
Claire looked terrified.
“No.””
I stood.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The front door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
He looked exactly like my father.
But different.
Softer.
Tired.
He looked at me.
And whispered:
“Marcus.””
Nobody moved.
May you like
Then he said:
“I’m your father.””
