Chapter 6: The Secret Hidden in Her Name
For several seconds, nobody breathed.
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
I looked at Diane.
Then Vanessa.
Then at Nia standing halfway up the stairs.
My daughter.
My little girl.
“If Nia was really my daughter?””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Diane started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“You didn’t know?””
“I had doubts.””
I stepped back.
“What kind of doubts?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Mom, stop.””
That was the first time Vanessa had defended someone other than herself.
Diane looked at her daughter.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No,” Vanessa whispered.
“You were destroying everything.””
I stared at my wife.
“Did you know about this?””
Her silence was immediate.
Painfully immediate.
“You knew.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I found out after my mother hired the investigator.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You let me spend months thinking I was failing as a father.””
“I was scared.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“Everyone was scared. Everyone was protecting themselves. And my daughter was the one paying for it.””
Nia started crying quietly.
I turned toward her.
“Sweetheart, come here.””
She walked down slowly.
I held her hand.
“No matter what anyone says, you are my daughter.””
She looked up at me.
“But what if I’m not?””
That question broke something inside me.
“You are.””
“But Grandma said—”
“I don’t care what she said.””
I knelt down.
“You are my daughter because I was there when you took your first steps. Because you used to hide my shoes before work because you wanted me to stay home. Because you call me when you lose a tooth. Because I love you.””
Her face crumpled.
She hugged me.
And I held her tighter than I ever had.
Behind us, Vanessa whispered.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t turn around.
An apology couldn’t erase months of fear.
Diane sat down.
“I was wrong.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She wiped her face.
“Because before Nia was born, Vanessa was going through a difficult time.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Mom.””
But Diane continued.
“She had problems with someone from her past.””
My heart started pounding.
“What person?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Diane looked at her.
“You need to tell him.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“After everything, he deserves the truth.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What are you talking about?””
She covered her face.
For the first time, she looked completely broken.
“There was someone before you.””
I said nothing.
“Before we met, I dated someone.””
“Ethan?””
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“His name was Daniel.””
The name meant nothing.
But the fear in her voice meant everything.
“What happened?””
She looked at Nia.
Then at me.
“Daniel disappeared before Nia was born.””
I stared.
“Disappeared?””
“He left.””
“Then why did your mother investigate?””
Diane looked down.
“Because Daniel came back.””
The room went silent.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“When?””
Diane hesitated.
“Six months ago.””
The same time everything changed.
The same time Vanessa started acting differently.
The same time Nia became afraid.
I looked at the hidden camera.
The secret documents.
The recordings.
It was all connected.
“Where is he now?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out another photograph.
“I found this during my investigation.””
He placed it on the table.
The picture showed a man standing outside our house.
Watching.
I picked it up.
The date was from one week ago.
The day before my business trip.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.
Three words.
*She knows everything.*
I looked at Ethan.
“Who wrote this?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“Daniel.””
A sudden crash came from outside.
Everyone turned.
The front window shook.
A shadow moved past the glass.

And Vanessa whispered in terror:
“He found us.””
