The Meal She Hid From Me / Chapter 2 / 20

Chapter 2: The Recording Behind the Refrigerator

The room felt smaller after those words played.

Nobody touched their food.

The chicken that had smelled so good when I walked in now looked disgusting.

I stared at the laptop screen.

The video had paused on Vanessa’s face from three days earlier, smiling as she served everyone dinner.

The woman I married.

The mother of my children.

The person I trusted with my entire life.

She looked like a stranger.

“Turn that off,” Vanessa said.

Her voice was low.

Not angry anymore.

Desperate.

I closed the laptop slowly.

“No.””

“Marcus, you don’t understand what you’re seeing.””

“Then explain it.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

My mother-in-law, Diane, shifted in her chair.

“Maybe everyone should calm down,” she said.

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Her eyes moved away.

That answer hurt almost as much as the recording.

“Diane,” I said, “did you know my daughter was eating scraps while everyone else had dinner?””

“She wasn’t starving,” Diane muttered.

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Nia.””

My daughter looked up.

“Come here.””

She walked toward me slowly.

I wrapped my arm around her.

She felt too light.

“Tell me the truth,” I whispered.

“When I was gone, what happened?””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

My wife stared back.

For a moment, I thought Nia would stay silent.

Then she spoke.

“Mom said you were too busy to care.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“She said you only wanted me because I made you feel like a good dad.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That is ridiculous.””

But Nia continued.

“She said if I complained, you would think I was causing problems.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You told our daughter that?””

“She misunderstood.””

“No,” I said.

“She understood perfectly.””

Ava started crying quietly.

I pulled her closer too.

“Dad,” Ava whispered, “I tried to tell Mom to stop.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You betrayed me?””

Ava flinched.

I stepped between them.

“Do not talk to her like that.””

For the first time in our marriage, Vanessa looked afraid of me.

Not because I was threatening her.

Because she knew she had lost control.

I picked up the memory card again.

“The recording. Who was that woman?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She remained silent.

I walked into the kitchen and opened the cabinets.

I didn’t know what I was looking for.

Proof.

Something.

Anything.

Then I noticed something strange.

The pantry shelves were organized perfectly.

Too perfectly.

Behind the cereal boxes was a folder.

I pulled it out.

Vanessa immediately stood.

“Marcus, don’t.””

That was enough.

I opened it.

Inside were printed emails.

Bank statements.

And photographs.

My hands went numb.

The pictures weren’t of Nia.

They were of me.

Me leaving work.

Me entering restaurants.

Me meeting with clients.

Someone had been watching me.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I held up one photograph.

“Why are there pictures of me?””

Her silence became louder than any confession.

Diane finally spoke.

“Vanessa was worried about you.””

I laughed once.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

“She hired someone to follow me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“You were changing.””

“Changing?””

“You were becoming distant.””

“So you punished Nia?””

“No!””

Her sudden scream echoed through the house.

Then she lowered her voice.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

I stared at her.

“By hurting my daughter?””

She wiped her face.

“You don’t know everything.””

I looked down at the folder again.

There was one document underneath all the photos.

A legal paper.

My name was written at the top.

My hands tightened around it.

“Vanessa…”

She didn’t move.

“What is this?””

She looked at the paper.

And the color disappeared from her face.

“Where did you find that?””

I lifted it.

“Answer me.””

The room went silent.

Then Nia whispered something that made everyone freeze.

“Dad…”

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She pointed at the document.

“I saw that before.””

My heart started pounding.

“Where?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“In Mom’s room.””

I stepped closer.

“When?””

She swallowed.

“The night before you left for your trip.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What were you planning while I was gone?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, her phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

And then she whispered a name.

May you like

A name I had never heard before.

“Ethan.””
