Chapter 4: The Envelope on the Doorstep

I stared at the envelope in the stranger’s hand.

My first instinct was to open the door.

My second was to remember the fear in Vanessa’s eyes.

Not anger.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

That scared me more.

“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered from behind me.

“Please.””

I turned around.

She looked like someone who had spent years building a wall and had just watched it collapse.

“Who is he?””

She didn’t answer.

The man outside knocked again.

This time harder.

“Mr. Hale,” he called through the door.

“You deserve to know the truth.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

I unlocked the door but kept the chain attached.

The man looked to be in his forties. He wore a dark jacket and held the envelope tightly against his chest.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

He glanced past me.

At Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“My name is Ethan Cole.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The name finally had a face.

“You’re the one in the recording,” I said.

His expression changed.

“So she finally admitted that exists?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Ethan, leave.””

He ignored her.

“Mr. Hale, I’m not here to hurt you.””

“Then why are you here?””

He lifted the envelope.

“Because your wife has been lying to you for a very long time.””

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You really want to play that game?””

Something passed between them.

A history.

A secret.

A betrayal I didn’t understand.

I removed the chain.

Vanessa immediately said, “Marcus, don’t.””

But I opened the door.

Ethan stepped inside.

He placed the envelope on the table.

“I know this looks bad,” he said.

I laughed quietly.

“Bad stopped being the word an hour ago.””

He nodded.

“Fair.””

I didn’t sit.

Neither did he.

“Start talking.””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“She contacted me six months ago.””

My chest tightened.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.””

Ethan continued.

“She wanted information about you.””

“Why?””

“She thought you were hiding money.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“Money?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You traveled constantly. You were never home. I didn’t know what you were doing.””

“So you hired someone to investigate me?””

“I was scared.””

“No.””

I pointed upstairs.

“You were cruel.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

For a second, I saw the woman I married.

Then I remembered my daughter eating cold rice.

Ethan opened the envelope.

Inside were printed documents.

“The investigation started with your finances,” he said.

“But I found something else.””

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Vanessa.

Standing outside a building I recognized.

My old office.

“When was this taken?”” I asked.

“Seven months ago.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“What were you doing there?””

Silence.

Ethan placed another photo down.

Then another.

Vanessa meeting with someone.

Handing over papers.

Talking in parking lots.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Ethan leaned forward.

“Your wife wasn’t investigating you.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She was preparing against you.””

My stomach dropped.

“Preparing for what?””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“For a divorce.””

The word hung in the room.

My daughters were upstairs.

My family was falling apart downstairs.

“You were planning to leave me?””

“No,” she said quickly.

“Then why were there legal documents with my name on them?””

She looked down.

“Because I needed protection.””

“From me?””

She didn’t answer.

Ethan reached into the envelope again.

“This is the part she doesn’t want you to see.””

He pulled out a folder.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it.

The first page was a custody proposal.

My hands went cold.

The second page was worse.

A statement.

A statement claiming I was emotionally absent.

Unstable.

A father who prioritized business over his children.

I looked up slowly.

“Did you write this?””

Vanessa whispered, “I was angry.””

“Did you?””

Her silence answered.

Ethan spoke quietly.

“She was building a case.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because Vanessa wanted to leave.

People fall out of love.

People change.

That happens.

But she had been preparing to take my children while making me look like the villain.

And then I saw something else.

A signature.

Not Vanessa’s.

Someone else’s.

“Who signed this?”” I asked.

Ethan’s face changed.

“That’s why I came tonight.””

I looked closer.

The signature belonged to a witness.

A witness who supposedly saw my behavior.

A witness who claimed to know our family.

I recognized the name immediately.

My blood ran cold.

Because it wasn’t Ethan.

It wasn’t a lawyer.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had sat at my dinner table.

Someone who had watched Nia eat alone.

May you like

The signature at the bottom belonged to…

“Diane?””
