Chapter 12: The Truth About Daniel

Nobody spoke after Daniel’s words.

They hung in the air like smoke.

Hide you from Lily.

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked older than the man I had imagined.

Not dangerous.

Not powerful.

Just broken.

“It means someone wanted Lily to believe you were the reason she lost her mother.””

“And who?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You do.””

“Stop.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You remember the night.””

Vanessa’s face drained.

“What night?””

I looked between them.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“I don’t remember everything.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“That’s convenient.””

My anger rose.

“Enough.””

Both of them looked at me.

“My daughters are upstairs waiting for me to protect them.””

I pointed at Lily.

“She spent eighteen years without her mother.””

Then at Vanessa.

“And I spent years living inside a lie.””

I stepped forward.

“So nobody leaves this room until I get the truth.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what I wanted.””

He walked to the table.

He picked up an old photograph.

“This was taken the day Lily disappeared.””

He handed it to me.

The picture showed Vanessa outside a hospital.

Holding a baby.

Standing beside another person.

Diane.

And another woman.

I recognized her.

A woman from my company.

My assistant.

“Why is my employee in this photo?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she was part of it.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“Her name is Claire.””

I remembered her.

She had worked for me for five years.

Organized my schedule.

Handled my documents.

She was the person who knew everything about my life.

Daniel continued.

“Claire knew Vanessa before you met her.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel pointed to the photograph.

“She helped arrange the transfer.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Because Claire wanted revenge.””

“Revenge for what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“For your father.””

The room went silent.

My father.

A man who had been dead for ten years.

I felt a chill.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Daniel sat down.

“Everything.””

I stared at him.

“Explain.””

“Your father ruined Claire’s family.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Daniel looked at the photographs.

“Your father built his company by destroying people.””

I felt defensive.

“My father wasn’t perfect.””

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“But you never knew the worst parts.””

My mind raced.

The forged documents.

The fake signatures.

The hidden camera.

The investigation.

The lies.

All of it connected back to someone I trusted.

Claire.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Claire.

I opened it.

My blood went cold.

*I know Daniel is with you.*

A second message appeared.

*I know Lily is alive.*

Then a third.

*But you still don’t know what your father did to my family.*

I looked at Daniel.

“How does she know?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the door.

“She’s here.””

Everyone turned.

The old building fell silent.

Then footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Slow.

Confident.

A woman appeared in the doorway.

Claire.

The person who had managed my life for years.

The person who knew my passwords.

My schedule.

My family.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then Lily.

Then me.

“I’m sorry it took so long,” she said.

I stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

Claire smiled sadly.

“What your father should have done eighteen years ago.””

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

“Tell Marcus the truth.””

May you like

She looked directly at Vanessa.

“Tell him why his father paid you to keep Lily hidden.””
