Chapter 9: The Photograph That Changed Everything
Nobody moved.
The man behind the glass held the photograph against the window like he wanted us to see it.
Like he wanted us to know.
Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.
Detective Morgan raised her weapon.
“Michael Vance!””
The man didn’t run.
That scared me more.
A guilty person runs.
A desperate person runs.
But Michael just stood there.
Calm.
Almost relieved.
Then he slowly placed the photograph on the floor.
And stepped away from the window.
“Where is my son?”” I shouted.
My voice cracked through the silence.
Michael looked at me.
Not Elena.
Not the police.
Me.
Then he disappeared into the hallway.
The officers rushed inside.
I followed before anyone could stop me.
The house was chaos.
Drawers open.
Furniture moved.
Evidence markers everywhere.
But Michael was gone.
A side door near the kitchen was swinging slightly.
He had escaped.
Detective Morgan cursed under her breath.
“He wanted us to see that.””
“What?””
“The photograph.””
I looked down.
The image was being examined by an officer.
It showed a little girl.
Emma.
And Leo.
Standing together.
But there was something strange.
The background.
Behind them was not Elena’s house.
It was an unfamiliar building.
An old building.
A brick wall.
A faded sign.
Detective Morgan stared at it.
Then immediately pulled out her phone.
“What?””
She didn’t answer.
She was searching.
Seconds later, her face changed.
“Oh no.””
“What?””
She turned the screen toward another officer.
“This is the old Carter family property.””
I frowned.
“Emma’s house?””
“Yes.””
“But Emma disappeared eight years ago.””
Detective Morgan nodded.
“That’s why this doesn’t make sense.””
I stared at the photograph.
A thought entered my mind.
A terrible thought.
“Maybe she didn’t disappear.””
Everyone looked at me.
“Maybe someone wanted people to think she did.””
The room became quiet.
Detective Morgan looked at Elena.
My sister was sitting at the table, hands shaking.
“Elena.””
She looked up.
“Did you ever meet Emma?””
Slowly, Elena nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
She looked toward me.
“Before Leo disappeared.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You knew about her?””
“I knew Michael had a daughter.””
“But you never told anyone?””
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Because Michael told me she was dead.””
The answer stunned everyone.
“He lied?””
“Yes.””
“Why believe him?””
She looked down.
“Because I found proof.””
“What proof?””
Elena reached into her pocket.
For a moment, Detective Morgan moved toward her.
But Elena wasn’t reaching for a weapon.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this in Michael’s office.””
The paper was old.
Yellowed.
A child’s handwriting covered it.
Detective Morgan read it silently.
Then her face changed.
“What?””
She handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was a letter.
From Emma.
*Mom, I know Dad says nobody will believe me, but I didn’t run away. Please don’t let him find me.*
My hands shook.
Because beneath the letter was another name.
A name I recognized.
Not from the news.
Not from police reports.
From my own family.
The signature at the bottom belonged to:
*Sarah Vance.*
My wife.
I looked up slowly.
“No.””
Elena started crying.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””
My chest felt like it was collapsing.
“What does Sarah have to do with Emma?””
Nobody answered.
Then Elena whispered:
“David…”
Her voice broke.
“Your wife knew where Emma was.””
I stepped backward.
“That’s impossible.””
But then I remembered.
The sleepless nights.
The secrets.
The way Sarah reacted whenever Leo’s name came up.
The detective’s phone suddenly rang.
She answered.
A few seconds later, her face turned pale.
“David.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She lowered the phone.
“That was the hospital.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
She looked toward me.
“Sarah has been brought in.””
I froze.
“What happened?””
The detective swallowed.
“She woke up after collapsing.””
A terrible silence.
Then:
“And the first thing she said was…”
May you like
Nobody moved.
“She knows where Leo is.””
