Chapter 11: The Place Where Leo Waited
I didn’t tell Detective Morgan about the message.
That decision still bothers me.
I know it was reckless.
I know I should have trusted the police.
But when I saw that picture, all logic disappeared.
Fourteen months.
Fourteen months of wondering if my son was cold.
Hungry.
Scared.
Alive.
And suddenly there he was.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
My boy.
Alive.
The address was attached to the message.
An abandoned building on the edge of Sedona.
An old youth center that had been closed for years.
The same place where Emma Carter had supposedly been seen before she disappeared.
A coincidence.
Except nothing about this felt like coincidence anymore.
I drove there alone.
The building appeared at the end of a dirt road.
Broken windows.
Faded paint.
A rusted sign hanging above the entrance.
I stepped inside.
“Leo?””
My voice echoed.
No answer.
I walked deeper.
The air smelled like dust and rain.
Then I heard something.
A quiet sound.
A pencil scratching paper.
I froze.
“Leo?””
A small voice answered.
“Dad?””
My entire body stopped working.
Because I knew that voice.
I knew it before I saw him.
Leo stepped out from behind a doorway.
Older.
Taller.
Different.
But still my son.
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then he ran.
And I caught him.
I held him so tightly I was afraid I would hurt him.
But I couldn’t let go.
Not again.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I cried into his hair.
“No.””
“I’m sorry, Dad.””
“No, buddy.””
My voice broke.
“You don’t apologize for being alive.””
He held onto me.
Like he was afraid I would disappear.
After a while, I pulled back.
“Why didn’t you come home?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I tried.””
My heart broke.
“What?””
Leo looked toward the doorway.
“Michael found me.””
I felt anger rise.
“Where?””
“At Aunt Elena’s.””
I froze.
He nodded.
“She didn’t kidnap me.””
The words surprised me.
“She didn’t?””
Leo shook his head.
“She saved me.””
I sat beside him.
“Tell me everything.””
He looked down at his hands.
“That night at Grandpa’s house, I saw Michael.””
“The night you disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“He followed me.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because he thought I knew where Emma was.””
The pieces were coming together.
“But you didn’t.””
Leo shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why you?””
“Because he thought Aunt Sarah told me.””
My heart stopped.
Sarah.
Leo continued.
“Mom knew Emma.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
He looked scared.
“But Michael believed she told me where Emma was hiding.””
I stared at my son.
“What happened after you ran?””
“I found Aunt Elena.””
“And she brought you to her house?””
Leo nodded.
“She wanted to call you.””
“But?””
“But Michael found us.””
My blood went cold.
“He found the house?””
“Yes.””
Leo’s voice became smaller.
“He said if anyone knew where I was, people would get hurt.””
I clenched my fists.
“Why didn’t Elena tell us?””
Leo looked away.
“She tried.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
His eyes filled.
“Because Michael threatened her.””
A silence settled between us.
Then I noticed something.
“Leo.””
He looked up.
“Why did Maya say you were crying under the floor?””
His face changed.
Not fear.
Sadness.
“I wasn’t under the floor.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He looked toward the abandoned building.
“I was somewhere else.””
“Then why did she hear you?””
Leo whispered:
“Because Michael used that room to make me believe I couldn’t escape.””
I didn’t understand.
Then he said:
“He built it after he found out Aunt Elena was hiding me.””
My blood ran cold.
“The second room?””
Leo nodded.
“He put cameras there.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Leo looked at me.
“Because he wanted to know if I remembered where Emma was.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
He looked down.
“But I remembered something else.””
“What?””
Leo reached into his pocket.
And pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
“I found this in Michael’s things.””
I opened it.
The handwriting was not Leo’s.
Not Emma’s.
It was Sarah’s.
One sentence.
*If anything happens to me, David needs to know the truth about Emma.*
I looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
Leo’s face turned pale.
“From Michael.””
My phone rang.
Detective Morgan.
I answered immediately.
Her voice was urgent.
“David, where are you?””
I hesitated.
“With Leo.””
Silence.
Then:
“Thank God.””
I relaxed for half a second.
Then she continued.
“But you need to leave immediately.””
“Why?””
Her voice lowered.
“Because Michael isn’t looking for Leo.””
May you like
A pause.
“He’s looking for you.””
