Chapter 16: The Night Everything Began
The old Vance estate looked exactly the same.
That was the terrifying part.
The same iron gate.
The same long gravel driveway.
The same giant oak tree where Leo used to climb until Sarah yelled that he would break his neck.
Fourteen months earlier, this place had been filled with laughter.
Tonight, it was filled with police vehicles.
I sat in the passenger seat staring at the house.
The place where my son disappeared.
The place where my entire family had apparently lied to me.
Detective Morgan sat behind the wheel.
“David.””
I didn’t answer.
“You need to be prepared.””
“For what?””
She looked toward the house.
“For the possibility that the truth is worse than what you think.””
I almost laughed.
What could be worse?
My son was hidden.
My wife knew.
My sister lied.
My father was involved.
I thought I had already reached the bottom.
I was wrong.
Inside the estate, officers searched room by room.
The old house smelled like dust and memories.
The living room still had the same furniture from the barbecue.
The same fireplace.
The same family photos.
Except now every photograph looked like evidence.
I walked toward the backyard.
The gate was still there.
The same gate I found open.
The same gate where Leo’s blue sneaker had been discovered.
I touched the rusted metal.
Then I noticed something.
A mark.
Near the bottom hinge.
Fresh scratches.
Detective Morgan saw it too.
“What is that?””
I crouched.
The scratches formed a pattern.
Not random.
A symbol.
A small circle with a line through it.
I recognized it.
My father used to draw it.
When I was a kid.
On notebooks.
On old papers.
“What is this?””
Morgan asked.
I swallowed.
“My father’s mark.””
She looked at me.
“Why would he mark the gate?””
Before I could answer, an officer called from inside.
“Detective!””
We ran.
The officer stood in the old study.
A hidden compartment had been discovered behind a bookshelf.
Inside were files.
Dozens of them.
Detective Morgan opened the first folder.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She handed it to me.
The label read:
*CARTER CASE.*
Emma.
I opened it.
Reports.
Photographs.
Notes.
And one document that made my hands shake.
A signed agreement.
Between my father and Michael.
My father had paid him.
Not once.
Multiple times.
“Why would he do this?””
Detective Morgan kept reading.
“Because he was trying to control the situation.””
“What situation?””
She looked at me.
“Your father knew Emma was alive.””
I stared.
“And he knew Leo was connected.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Then another officer found something.
A video camera.
Old.
Hidden inside the wall.
My stomach turned.
Detective Morgan looked at it.
“Get that copied immediately.””
Minutes later, the footage appeared on a laptop.
The date was fourteen months earlier.
The night Leo vanished.
The camera showed the backyard.
My family.
The barbecue.
The children running.
Then a figure appeared.
A man.
Walking toward the gate.
I leaned closer.
The image was blurry.
But I knew the person.
My father.
He opened the gate.
Then looked around.
A few seconds later, Leo followed him.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Detective Morgan looked at me.
“David.””
“That’s not possible.””
The video continued.
My father spoke to Leo.
Leo looked confused.
Then scared.
Then my father pointed toward the driveway.
Another person entered the frame.
Michael.
My hands trembled.
The two men were talking.
Then Leo ran.
Not away from them.
Toward the house.
Toward Elena’s direction.
The video froze.
Detective Morgan paused it.
“Look.””
I stared.
Near the edge of the frame.
A third person stood watching.
A woman.
Sarah.
My wife.
My breath disappeared.
She had been there.
She had seen everything.
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice whispered:
“David.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
My father.
“Where is Leo?””
A long silence.
Then:
“You’re finally asking the right question.””
My grip tightened.
“Where is Emma?””
Another pause.
Then my father said:
May you like
“Ask Sarah what she did.””
The call ended.
