Chapter 5: The Secret Elena Buried

I don’t remember climbing out of that room.

I don’t remember Detective Morgan telling me to step aside.

I don’t remember the officers separating Elena from everyone else.

I only remember the photograph.

Leo.

My son.

Alive.

Sitting on a mattress under my sister’s house.

And Elena standing beside him with one hand resting on his shoulder.

Like nothing was wrong.

Like she wasn’t looking at a child who had been missing for over a year.

Like she hadn’t watched us destroy ourselves searching for him.

When I finally looked at Elena again, I didn’t recognize her.

“Why?””

The word came out broken.

Not angry.

Not loud.

Just empty.

“Why was my son here?””

Elena’s lips trembled.

“David…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Do not say my name like you’re still my sister.””

The pain on her face almost made me hesitate.

Almost.

Then I remembered Sarah crying herself to sleep.

I remembered Maya asking if Leo was trapped somewhere.

I remembered every birthday cake with one missing candle.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Elena closed her eyes.

“I knew he was here.””

The confession landed like a physical blow.

Detective Morgan immediately stepped forward.

“Mrs. Vance, I need you to explain exactly what you mean.””

Elena looked toward the floor.

“I didn’t hurt him.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You locked him underground.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I saved him.””

Everyone went silent.

“What?””

Elena looked at me.

“You don’t understand what happened that night.””

“The night my son disappeared?””

She flinched.

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

A horrible sound.

“You expect me to believe there’s a version of that night where you hiding my child makes sense?””

She wiped her face.

“Leo ran away.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He wasn’t taken.””

The room went quiet.

“He was angry.””

My stomach tightened.

“Angry about what?””

Elena hesitated.

Then she looked at me.

“About Sarah.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“My wife?””

Elena nodded.

“Leo heard you and Sarah fighting.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“He thought Sarah wanted to leave.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Elena’s voice became desperate.

“He was eight years old, David. He didn’t understand adult problems. He heard raised voices, he heard Sarah say she couldn’t do this anymore, and he thought he was the reason.””

My chest tightened.

Because I remembered that week.

The arguments.

The stress.

The exhaustion.

But none of that explained fourteen months.

None of it explained the hidden room.

“He came to me,” Elena said.

I stared at her.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because he begged me not to.””

I almost laughed.

A child begged you to hide him from his father, and you listened?

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

She looked down.

“My mistake was believing I could fix it.””

Detective Morgan crossed her arms.

“Explain.””

Elena took a shaky breath.

“Leo showed up at my house that night. He was terrified. He thought everyone was angry with him.””

“He disappeared from Grandpa’s property.””

“I know.””

“And you just brought him here?””

“He didn’t want to go home.””

My voice rose.

“He was eight!””

“I know!””

Elena finally broke.

“I know!””

The entire room froze.

She covered her mouth.

Then whispered:

“I know.””

For the first time, I saw how exhausted she looked.

Not guilty.

Not innocent.

Just broken.

“I thought I could calm him down,” she continued.

“I thought after a few hours, I could convince him to come back.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked toward the hidden room.

“Because the next morning…”

Her voice stopped.

Detective Morgan stepped closer.

“The next morning what?””

Elena swallowed.

“The next morning Leo heard the news.””

My heart sank.

“What news?””

“The police were searching for him.””

“That’s not news. That was obvious.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“They said they believed he might have been kidnapped.””

A terrible silence filled the room.

“And?””

“He panicked.””

She looked at me.

“He thought if people found him, someone would get hurt.””

My face twisted.

“That makes no sense.””

“He was a child.””

Elena’s voice softened.

“He believed disappearing was protecting us.””

I looked back toward the hidden room.

The mattress.

The blanket.

The drawings.

A place my son had been hiding.

Not trapped.

Not at first.

But then I saw something on the wall.

A calendar.

Fourteen months of dates marked in pencil.

My blood turned cold.

Because Leo had written something underneath every single day.

A countdown.

Detective Morgan noticed it too.

“What is that?””

Nobody answered.

She walked closer.

Then read the final line.

Her expression changed.

“David…”

I moved beside her.

At the bottom of the calendar, written in Leo’s handwriting, were seven words.

*Aunt Elena said I can never leave.*

I turned slowly.

Elena looked like she had stopped breathing.

“Why would he write that?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then Maya screamed from upstairs.

A scream so full of fear that every officer ran toward the living room.

We followed.

My daughter stood beside the open floor entrance.

Her face was white.

She pointed down into the hidden room.

“Daddy…”

May you like

Her voice shook.

“There’s another door.””
