Chapter 7: The Child Behind the Second Door
The knocking stopped.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The darkness inside Elena’s hidden room felt alive.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
I could hear Maya breathing beside me.
I could hear Detective Morgan quietly instructing the officers to turn on their flashlights.
But all I could think about was one thing.
Someone was behind that door.
Someone had been behind that door while we were standing there.
“Daddy,” Maya whispered.
I squeezed her hand.
“I’m here.””
The flashlight beams returned, cutting through the darkness.
Detective Morgan stepped toward the second door.
“Everyone stays back.””
Elena’s voice suddenly broke.
“No.””
The detective stopped.
“No?””
Elena stared at the door.
Her face was pale.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
My sister looked like she was fighting herself.
Like two different versions of her were battling inside.
The woman who wanted to hide the truth.
And the woman who knew she couldn’t anymore.
“That room wasn’t supposed to exist,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at the door.
“Michael built it.””
The name felt like a curse.
Detective Morgan’s expression hardened.
“Your husband built a hidden room inside your hidden room?””
Elena nodded slowly.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“Three months after we got married.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Three months?””
“You knew for three months and said nothing?””
“I was afraid.””
I stepped forward.
“Afraid of what?””
Her eyes met mine.
“Of him.””
The answer shocked me.
Because Elena had always been the strongest person I knew.
She was the one who handled emergencies.
The one who never cried.
The one who always had a plan.
Seeing fear in her eyes was almost worse than seeing guilt.
Detective Morgan looked at the lock.
“Open it.””
Elena shook her head.
“I don’t have the key.””
“Then who does?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
Michael.
The officers searched the hidden room.
One of them found a small metal box beneath the mattress.
Inside were several keys.
Detective Morgan tested them one by one.
The fourth key turned.
The door opened.
A smell rushed out.
Not like the first room.
This was different.
Bleach.
Cold air.
And something sweet.
Like old perfume.
The flashlight moved inside.
The space was narrow.
A small room.
A child’s chair.
A table.
A camera mounted in the corner.
My stomach twisted.
“This isn’t storage,” Detective Morgan said quietly.
No.
It wasn’t.
It was a place where someone watched.
A place where someone controlled.
On the wall were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Leo.
My son.
But not just Leo.
There were pictures of him sleeping.
Eating.
Drawing.
Looking toward the hidden camera.
I felt sick.
Then I saw something else.
A second child.
A little girl.
Maybe seven years old.
Her face had been scratched out in every photograph.
“Morgan,” one officer said.
She walked over.
“What?””
He pointed at a folder on the table.
She opened it.
Inside were documents.
Missing person reports.
Newspaper clippings.
Children’s names.
My eyes moved over the pages.
And one name stopped me.
*Emma Carter.*
The officer looked up.
“That name sounds familiar.””
Detective Morgan’s face changed.
“It should.””
She turned toward Elena.
“Mrs. Vance, do you know who Emma Carter is?””
Elena started crying.
Not pretending.
Not hiding.
Real tears.
“I thought she was gone.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my sister.
“What does that mean?””
Elena covered her mouth.
“She was Michael’s daughter.””
The words hit like a wave.
“Michael had a daughter?””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
Elena looked toward the scratched-out photographs.
“She disappeared eight years ago.””
My skin went cold.
Eight years.
The same age as Leo when he vanished.
Detective Morgan flipped through the documents faster.
“Why were these in your house?””
Elena whispered:
“Because Michael was looking for her.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if you know him.””
She wiped her tears.
“Michael believed Emma was taken from him. He spent years searching. He became obsessed.””
“And Leo?””
Her face collapsed.
“Leo reminded him of Emma.””
I felt something inside me break.
“What are you saying?””
Elena looked at me.
“I’m saying Michael saw your son at the family gathering.””
My breath stopped.
“He was there?””
She nodded.
“He was watching.””
The room became silent.
The truth was finally forming.
A terrifying shape.
But there was one question I couldn’t ignore.
“If Michael took Leo…”
I looked around the room.
“Why did you hide him?””
Elena closed her eyes.
“Because I found Leo before Michael did.””
Nobody spoke.
She continued.
“And when I brought Leo here, I thought I was protecting him.””
I shook my head.
“You trapped him.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I tried to save him.””
Then the officer holding the old phone suddenly raised his hand.
“Detective.””
Everyone turned.
The phone screen had lit up again.
A new message appeared.
From Michael.

Only four words.
