Chapter 13: The Woman Who Vanished Twice

The first thing I felt was anger.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Anger.

Because after fourteen months of searching for Leo, after every nightmare, every unanswered question, every moment of believing my son was gone forever…

I had found him.

And now Sarah was missing.

Again.

I stared at the message from Detective Morgan until the words blurred.

*SHE’S GONE.*

“What happened?”” I asked.

Morgan’s voice came through the phone, tense and rushed.

“David, listen carefully. When officers arrived at the hospital room, Sarah wasn’t there.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean she wasn’t there?””

“The window was open.””

I looked toward the broken windows of the abandoned building.

My mind immediately connected the two places.

“No.””

“David—”

“Michael took her.””

There was silence.

Then Morgan said:

“That’s what we thought too.””

The way she said it made my chest tighten.

“You don’t believe that.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Sarah left voluntarily.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What?””

“We found the security footage.””

I looked at Leo.

He was watching me carefully.

“Your wife walked out of the hospital on her own.””

I couldn’t speak.

“She didn’t look injured,” Morgan continued.

“She wasn’t forced.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Where did she go?””

“We’re working on that.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You’re missing something.””

“David—”

“My wife would never leave Leo.””

I looked at my son.

Never.

Not after everything.

Not after all those nights she cried his name.

Unless…

A horrible thought entered my mind.

Unless she knew where he was.

Unless she had always known.

I hung up.

Leo looked at me.

“Dad?””

I turned toward him.

“What did Mom tell you?””

His face changed.

“She told me to be brave.””

“When?””

“The last time I saw her.””

My heart stopped.

“You saw your mother?””

He nodded.

“When?””

Leo looked down.

“Two days ago.””

I felt the room spin.

“Two days ago?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I thought I was protecting her.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone kept saying that.

Protecting.

Hiding.

Waiting.

All those words that sounded loving until you realized they were excuses.

“What happened?””

Leo sat down.

“She came to Aunt Elena’s house.””

“Why?””

“She wanted to take me away.””

My heart jumped.

“She knew you were there?””

He nodded.

“She said it wasn’t safe anymore.””

“Why didn’t she take you home?””

Leo looked toward the floor.

“Because she said someone was watching our house.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Michael.

Then Leo said something that made my blood run cold.

“She said Aunt Elena wasn’t the person we should have been afraid of.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Leo shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

A siren sounded outside.

Detective Morgan arrived minutes later.

She looked exhausted.

But when she saw Leo, her entire expression changed.

She had spent months searching for him.

Now he was standing right in front of her.

Alive.

She crouched down.

“Leo.””

He nodded.

“You remember me?””

He shook his head.

Morgan smiled sadly.

“That’s okay.””

Then she looked at me.

“We need to talk.””

We moved outside.

“The hospital footage shows Sarah leaving with someone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Michael?””

“No.””

She handed me a printed image.

The picture was blurry.

A woman walking through the hospital parking lot.

A second person beside her.

I stared.

The person was wearing a hood.

But the shape.

The height.

The movement.

I knew that walk.

“No.””

Morgan looked at me.

“You recognize them?””

I swallowed.

“It’s Elena.””

Silence.

Detective Morgan’s expression hardened.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena has been with officers the entire time.””

I looked back at the image.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not possible.””

Morgan studied me.

“David.””

I pointed at the picture.

“That’s my sister.””

She looked again.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

And her face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where?””

She looked at me.

“We just got another call.””

“From who?””

Her eyes moved toward Leo.

“From Elena.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she say?””

Morgan lowered the phone.

“She said she knows where Sarah went.””

A cold silence followed.

Then Morgan added:

“And she said Michael wasn’t the person who took Leo.””

I stared.

“Then who was?””

May you like

Morgan looked at the dark road ahead.

“Elena says you need to hear the truth from the person who started all of this.””
