Chapter 17: My Father’s Last Secret

We found my father before sunrise.

He didn’t run.

That was the first thing that surprised me.

He was sitting inside the old family barn.

The same barn where Leo used to play hide-and-seek.

The same place where my father taught me how to repair old tools.

But the man sitting there looked different.

Older.

Broken.

Like he had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

When he saw me, he sighed.

“I knew you would come.””

I stared at him.

“You knew everything.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than I expected.

Detective Morgan stepped forward.

“Mr. Vance, you need to answer some questions.””

My father nodded.

“I will.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t understand.

“You watched us search for Leo.””

“Yes.””

“You watched Sarah fall apart.””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“You watched me think my son was dead.””

His voice cracked.

“I know.””

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted answers.

I wanted the last fourteen months back.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

“I know.””

He looked toward the barn door.

“But I failed.””

Detective Morgan crossed her arms.

“Start from the beginning.””

My father took a deep breath.

“Emma Carter came to me first.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She found out I knew her father.””

Michael.

“I was one of his investors years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew him?””

“Yes.””

“Before Sarah?””

“Yes.””

He looked ashamed.

“I knew what kind of man he was.””

“Then why help him?””

“I didn’t know at first.””

He explained.

Michael had convinced him Emma had been kidnapped by someone else.

He used fake evidence.

Fake stories.

My father believed him.

Until he found Emma.

Alive.

Terrified.

“My mistake was trusting him.””

I stared.

“Where was Emma?””

My father looked away.

“She was hiding.””

“From Michael?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

His face collapsed.

“Because Michael threatened you.””

Me.

“How?””

“He knew about your family.””

My father looked at me.

“He knew Sarah was helping Emma.””

A silence followed.

“And Leo?””

My father closed his eyes.

“That was never supposed to happen.””

The words made me angry.

“Never supposed to happen?””

He nodded.

“Michael came to the barbecue because he thought Emma would contact Sarah.””

“But she wasn’t there.””

“She was.””

I froze.

“What?””

My father nodded.

“Emma was hiding nearby.””

The truth felt impossible.

“The whole time?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

He looked toward the old estate.

“Inside the guest house.””

I stared.

“The guest house?””

“That’s where Sarah brought her.””

My mind raced.

“Then why did Leo disappear?””

My father’s face changed.

“Because Leo saw them.””

“Who?””

“Emma.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“My son knew?””

“Yes.””

My father looked at me.

“And Michael realized Leo was the only person who could lead him to her.””

Detective Morgan stepped closer.

“Where is Sarah now?””

My father didn’t answer.

“Where?””

Finally, he whispered:

“She went to get Emma.””

My heart stopped.

“She knows where Emma is?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

My father looked at me with sadness.

“Because she was afraid of what would happen when you learned the truth.””

“What truth?””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a photograph.

And handed it to me.

It showed three people.

Sarah.

Emma.

And Leo.

Standing together.

The date was one week after Leo disappeared.

My hands shook.

“She saw him.””

My father nodded.

“She found him.””

I stared.

“Then why did she let me suffer?””

My father’s voice broke.

“Because she made a deal.””

“With who?””

He looked toward the darkness outside.

“With Michael.””

The barn suddenly felt freezing.

“What deal?””

My father whispered:

“She promised to give him Emma…”

A pause.

“…if he let Leo live.””

I stepped backward.

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“That’s the truth.””

The door behind us suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood outside.

Sarah.

But she wasn’t alone.

A young woman stood beside her.

Older than the photographs.

But unmistakable.

May you like

Emma Carter.

And Sarah was holding a gun.
