Chapter 12: The Man Who Wanted the Truth Buried

I didn’t move.

The abandoned building suddenly felt smaller.

The broken windows.

The empty halls.

The shadows in every corner.

All of it changed.

Michael hadn’t been chasing a missing child.

He had been controlling the story.

Every piece.

Every lie.

Every person.

“Dad?””

Leo looked at me.

I forced myself to stay calm.

“We’re leaving.””

He nodded.

But before we reached the exit, a sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Leo grabbed my arm.

“Dad.””

“I know.””

We moved behind an old storage wall.

The footsteps got closer.

Then a voice echoed through the building.

“David.””

Michael.

My entire body went tense.

“Bring my son out.””

Leo whispered:

“He’s lying.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He always says that.””

Michael’s footsteps continued.

“He thinks everyone belongs to him.””

I held Leo closer.

The man who had destroyed our family was only a few feet away.

And for the first time, I understood something.

Michael wasn’t powerful because he was smart.

He was powerful because everyone around him was afraid.

A shadow crossed the doorway.

Then Michael appeared.

He looked nothing like the monster I imagined.

That was the worst part.

He looked normal.

A tired man.

A grieving father.

The kind of person strangers would trust.

“David,” he said softly.

I stepped out.

Michael looked relieved.

“There you are.””

“You knew I would come.””

He smiled slightly.

“You always come for your children.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“You don’t get to talk about children.””

His expression changed.

“I loved Emma.””

“You terrorized her.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

Michael looked toward the hallway.

“Where is Leo?””

“You tell me.””

A strange sadness crossed his face.

“You think I wanted to hurt him.””

“I know you did.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I wanted answers.””

I laughed.

“Answers?””

“About Emma.””

“She was a child.””

“So was Leo.””

The words sounded almost like regret.

Almost.

Then I noticed something.

His hand.

He was holding a phone.

Recording.

“You wanted me here.””

Michael smiled.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.””

He looked toward the ceiling.

“Your wife destroyed my family.””

My anger rose.

“You’re blaming Sarah?””

“She knew where Emma was.””

“Where?””

Michael looked at me.

“She helped Emma escape.””

The words stunned me.

“What?””

“Yes.””

A cold silence followed.

“Emma wasn’t kidnapped.””

Michael’s eyes filled with something between pain and rage.

“She ran because of what I did.””

The confession hung in the air.

For the first time, Michael looked less like a villain.

And more like someone finally admitting what he had spent years hiding.

“I lost my daughter because of my mistakes.””

“Then why Leo?””

“Because I thought he knew where she went.””

“He didn’t.””

“I know that now.””

I stared at him.

“Then why keep him?””

Michael looked away.

And for a moment, he looked ashamed.

“Because I didn’t know how to let go.””

A sound came from behind me.

Sirens.

Detective Morgan.

Michael heard them too.

His face changed.

Panic.

Not fear.

Desperation.

He stepped backward.

“David, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Emma isn’t the only person who disappeared.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked at Leo.

Then back at me.

“Ask your wife who helped her.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Detective Morgan.

Only three words.

*WE FOUND SARAH.*

I opened it.

May you like

The next message appeared immediately.

*SHE’S GONE.*
