Chapter 10: The Truth My Wife Hid

The drive to the hospital felt endless.

Every red light felt intentional.

Every slow car in front of me felt like the universe was trying to keep me away from the answer I had spent fourteen months chasing.

Leo.

My son.

Alive.

Somewhere.

And somehow, the woman I loved might have known more than she ever told me.

I kept replaying Elena’s words.

*Your wife knew where Emma was.*

No.

That couldn’t be true.

Sarah was Leo’s mother.

She was the woman who stopped eating after he disappeared.

The woman who slept with his old blanket because it still smelled like him.

The woman who searched online every night for missing children.

The woman who cried every time someone mentioned his name.

She couldn’t have been hiding something.

Could she?

When I reached the hospital, Detective Morgan was already there.

“She’s awake,” she said.

“Where is she?””

“Room 214.””

I moved immediately.

Then stopped.

Because I saw the hesitation on her face.

“What?””

“She asked for you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Only me?””

The detective nodded.

“And she said something else.””

“What?””

“She said not to let Elena near her.””

I felt the world tilt.

Inside the room, Sarah looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

Her face was pale.

Her hair messy.

A hospital bracelet wrapped around her wrist.

She looked nothing like the woman who used to laugh loudly while cooking dinner.

The woman who danced with Leo in the kitchen.

The woman who always said our family was the only thing that mattered.

When she saw me, tears immediately filled her eyes.

“David.””

I stood beside the bed.

“Where is our son?””

Her face collapsed.

And that was when I knew.

She knew.

Not suspected.

Not guessed.

Knew.

“Sarah.””

She covered her mouth.

“I was going to tell you.””

The sentence made something inside me break.

“When?””

She cried.

“I don’t know.””

“When, Sarah?””

“I was scared.””

I stepped back.

“Scared?””

“My son was missing.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice rose.

“You don’t know what I saw.””

The room went silent.

“What did you see?””

Sarah looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“Emma.””

I felt cold.

“Tell me everything.””

She wiped her face.

“Eight years ago, before we knew each other, I worked with a charity that helped families of missing children.””

I listened.

“Emma Carter was one of the cases.””

The name felt familiar now.

“She wasn’t missing because she ran away.””

My hands tightened.

“What happened?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Her father lied.””

Michael.

The name immediately filled the room.

“He told everyone Emma disappeared. He made people believe he was a grieving father.””

“But?””

“But Emma was alive.””

I stared at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because I found her.””

The words barely came out.

“What?””

Sarah nodded.

“I found her hiding at an old property outside town. She was terrified.””

My mind struggled to process it.

“You found a missing child and never told anyone?””

“I did.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I reported it.””

“Then why was she still missing?””

“Because Michael got there first.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

“He convinced the authorities that I was mistaken. He said Emma was another child. He had paperwork. Evidence.””

She swallowed.

“I lost contact with her.””

“And then?””

Sarah looked down.

“Years later, I saw Michael again.””

“Where?””

“At your father’s barbecue.””

The room went silent.

“The night Leo disappeared?””

She nodded.

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because when I saw him, I knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That he recognized Leo.””

I stared at her.

“He was watching him.””

The same memory hit me.

The gate.

The missing shoe.

The empty yard.

The impossible silence.

“Sarah…”

She grabbed my hand.

“I thought Leo was gone because of Michael.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her tears fell.

“Because I was afraid you would blame yourself.””

I pulled my hand away.

“You let me search for fourteen months.””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“You let me bury my son.””

“No!””

She cried out.

“I never believed he was dead.””

The words stopped me.

Sarah looked directly at me.

“Not once.””

The room became quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Because Leo called me.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Two weeks after he disappeared.””

I stared at her.

“You spoke to him?””

She nodded.

“Only for thirty seconds.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Because he begged me not to.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because he was terrified.””

“Terrified of what?””

Sarah looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Of Michael.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One photo.

Leo.

Older.

Thinner.

Standing outside a building.

Alive.
