Chapter 14: The Sister’s Confession

We found Elena at an abandoned church twenty minutes outside town.

The building had been empty for years.

Broken windows.

Dust-covered pews.

A place people went when they had nowhere else to hide.

That seemed fitting.

Because everyone in my life had been hiding something.

When we entered, Elena was sitting alone near the front.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Like the last twenty-four hours had taken years from her.

When she saw me, tears immediately filled her eyes.

“David.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Where is Sarah?””

Elena looked down.

“I don’t know.””

The answer made anger rise inside me.

“You called us here.””

“Yes.””

“Then start talking.””

Detective Morgan stood beside me.

“This is your chance to explain everything.””

Elena nodded.

“I know.””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

“I lied to you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s the understatement of the century.””

She accepted the anger.

“I lied because I thought I could fix what happened.””

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

“Emma.””

The name still carried weight.

The missing girl who connected everyone.

“The truth is, Sarah didn’t just find Emma.””

I waited.

“She helped her escape.””

I already knew that.

But Elena’s next words changed everything.

“She brought Emma to me.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Sarah knew she couldn’t protect Emma alone.””

“Why you?””

Elena looked away.

“Because Michael trusted me.””

The room became silent.

“You were helping her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Leo end up in your house?””

Her face broke.

“Because Michael found out.””

She explained everything.

Years earlier, Sarah had discovered Emma hiding from her father.

Emma had revealed years of abuse and control.

Sarah tried to report it.

But Michael had money.

Connections.

A perfect public image.

Nobody believed them.

So Sarah helped Emma disappear.

She created a new identity.

A new life.

A chance to start over.

But Michael never stopped searching.

“He found out Sarah was involved,” Elena said.

“And years later?””

“He saw Leo.””

I closed my eyes.

“He thought Leo knew where Emma was.””

“Yes.””

“But Leo didn’t.””

“No.””

Elena’s voice became smaller.

“He was just a child caught in someone else’s war.””

I looked at her.

“Then why hide him?””

She started crying.

“Because Michael came for him.””

The words hung there.

“The night Leo disappeared, Michael followed him from your father’s house.””

I remembered the gate.

The missing shoe.

The empty yard.

“He cornered him.””

Elena continued.

“Leo escaped and found me.””

“And you hid him.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked directly at me.

“Because Michael threatened Sarah.””

My anger faded slightly.

Only slightly.

“What did he threaten?””

Elena whispered:

“He said if you found Leo, Sarah would disappear.””

My heart stopped.

“Disappear?””

“Michael had people watching her.””

I shook my head.

“But you let us suffer.””

Her tears fell.

“I know.””

“You let me think my son was dead.””

“I know.””

“You let Maya grow up believing she lost her brother.””

“I know!””

Her voice broke.

“I know, David.””

The church went silent.

Then Elena reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because I knew one day you would need it.””

“What is it?””

She handed it to me.

Inside was a letter.

From Sarah.

The date was fourteen months ago.

The night Leo disappeared.

I read the first line.

*David, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep everyone safe.*

My hands shook.

I continued.

*Leo is alive. Elena is protecting him. But there is one thing you don’t know.*

I looked at Elena.

“What?””

She looked away.

I read the next sentence.

*Michael was never the only person searching for Emma.*

The room became silent.

Then the final line appeared.

*The person who wants Emma found is someone you trust.*

I looked up.

“Who?””

Elena’s face went pale.

Before she could answer, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And froze.

Detective Morgan noticed.

“Who is it?””

Elena didn’t speak.

She slowly turned the phone around.

The caller ID showed a name.

A name none of us expected.

*David Vance.*

My own name.

May you like

My own number.

Calling from a phone that was sitting in my pocket.
