Chapter 9: The Bloodline Secret

I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

David.

My father.

Emma’s father.

The same man who had destroyed Emily’s life had somehow been connected to mine.

“No,” I whispered.

Michael looked at me.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

I grabbed the document.

“This could be fake.””

Michael nodded.

“That’s why I kept the evidence.””

He opened another folder.

Inside were medical records.

DNA reports.

Old photographs.

Every piece of evidence connected the same name.

David Miller.

I felt sick.

My entire life had been built on someone else’s lie.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Michael looked away.

“Because Mom begged me.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew what David would do.””

Emily sat down.

“I should have told you years ago.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For once, she didn’t make excuses.

“I was afraid.””

I looked at Emma.

She was sitting quietly.

Listening.

A child shouldn’t have to understand adult mistakes.

I walked toward her.

“Emma, go with Lily for a minute.””

She looked worried.

“Are you leaving?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

I knelt beside her.

“I’m staying.””

She nodded.

Then Lily took her hand and led her away.

When they were gone, I turned back.

“What was David trying to find?””

Michael looked at Thomas.

“The evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“The evidence that could destroy him.””

Michael pulled out a small device.

A recorder.

“Your grandfather discovered David was involved in illegal activities. He collected proof.””

“And Emma?””

Michael looked serious.

“Emma was the only person connected to the evidence who was still alive.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your grandfather hid the final piece inside something only David would never think to check.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

Michael looked toward the hallway.

“At the beginning.””

I didn’t understand.

Then I remembered.

The wall.

The hidden room.

The place where Emma had survived.

“He hid it in my house.””

Michael nodded.

“Your father knew one day you would uncover it.””

Suddenly, the lights flickered.

Everyone stopped.

Thomas looked toward the window.

“We’re not alone.””

A car sat outside.

Black.

Engine running.

Michael grabbed my arm.

“We need to leave.””

But it was too late.

The front door opened.

A voice echoed through the house.

“Running away never worked for this family.””

David.

Emily froze.

“No.””

Michael’s face hardened.

“He followed us.””

David walked into the room slowly.

But he wasn’t holding a weapon.

He was holding a folder.

He threw it onto the table.

“I’m tired of being the villain in a story written by people who betrayed me.””

I stared at him.

“You kidnapped a child.””

His expression changed.

“I saved her.””

“You hid her in a wall.””

“Because your family was looking for her.””

Everyone went silent.

“What?””

David smiled.

“Ask Michael what happened the night Emma disappeared.””

Michael looked away.

And that scared me.

Because for the first time…

Michael looked guilty.

David stepped closer.

“The truth is, Ryan…”

He pointed at my brother.

“Your beloved brother wasn’t trying to save Emma.””

May you like

He whispered:

“He was the reason she vanished.””
