Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Closet

“Daddy?””

The word came from the darkness behind my bedroom wall, and every part of my body went cold.

For weeks, I had convinced myself that the strange noises in our house were nothing. Pipes. Mice.

Old wood settling after midnight. Anything except what my four-year-old daughter, Lily, kept insisting it was.

“A little girl is hungry,” she whispered to me one night while I tucked her into bed.

I smiled, brushing her hair away from her face.

“A little girl where, sweetheart?””

She pointed toward our bedroom wall.

“Behind there.””

I laughed softly because that was what parents did when children said impossible things. I kissed her forehead and told her there were no monsters or secret people hiding in our walls.

I was wrong.

My name is Ryan Carter. I was thirty-six years old, married to my college sweetheart, Emily, and the proud father of the happiest little girl I had ever known.

Our home was supposed to be perfect.

A quiet neighborhood. A beautiful two-story house. Family pictures hanging in the hallway. Sunday breakfasts together.

But perfection has a way of hiding cracks.

The first strange thing happened three weeks earlier.

I was lying in bed when I heard it.

A soft scratching sound.

Three slow taps.

Then silence.

I sat up and looked toward the wall behind our headboard.

“Emily?”” I whispered.

She opened one eye.

“What?””

“Did you hear that?””

She stared at me for a moment, then rolled over.

“Ryan, please don’t start. You’ve been working too much.””

Maybe she was right.

Maybe exhaustion was making me imagine things.

But then Lily started leaving food near her closet.

At first, I thought she was just playing.

Children invented imaginary worlds. They created invisible friends and secret kingdoms. I remembered doing the same thing when I was young.

But yesterday afternoon, I walked past Lily’s room and saw her kneeling on the floor.

She looked nervous.

Too nervous.

“What are you doing, sweetheart?”” I asked.

She jumped and quickly hid something behind her back.

“Nothing.””

I crouched beside her.

“Lily.””

Her little eyes filled with tears.

“She’s hungry, Daddy.””

My smile faded.

“Who is hungry?””

She looked toward the closet.

“My friend.””

A chill moved through me.

I slowly opened the closet door.

Nothing.

Just her clothes, toys, and a few stuffed animals.

“Lily, there’s nobody here.””

She shook her head.

“Yes, there is.””

Then she walked forward and touched the wooden panel near the back corner.

“She lives here.””

I examined the wall carefully.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then I noticed something.

A small piece of the wooden panel was loose.

My heart started beating faster.

I grabbed a screwdriver from the garage and returned to Lily’s room.

“Ryan?”” Emily called from the hallway.

“What are you doing?””

I didn’t answer.

Something inside me already knew.

I removed the screws one by one.

The panel moved.

A smell drifted out.

Dust.

Old fabric.

And something else.

A tiny living space had been hidden inside the wall.

A blanket.

An empty water bottle.

Crackers.

Children’s drawings.

My hands began shaking.

Someone had been living inside our house.

I pulled the panel wider.

And then I saw her.

A little girl sat curled up in the darkness.

She looked about five years old.

Her hair was messy. Her face was pale. Her clothes were dirty.

But her eyes…

Her eyes were familiar.

She stared at me like she had been waiting years for this moment.

Behind me, Emily screamed.

“Don’t touch her, Ryan!””

I froze.

The fear in her voice wasn’t normal fear.

It was recognition.

The little girl slowly reached toward me.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“Daddy?””

My entire world stopped.

I had never seen this child before.

But before I could speak, she lifted her hair away from her neck.

A small birthmark appeared.

A dark crescent shape.

The exact same mark I had carried since birth.

I looked at my own hand.

Then at hers.

My knees nearly gave out.

Emily made a broken sound behind me.

She collapsed onto the floor.

“Emily,” I whispered.

“What is happening?””

She covered her face, sobbing.

The little girl crawled forward, reaching for me.

“Daddy, I knew you would find me.””

Then something moved behind her.

A heavy footstep echoed inside the wall.

Not hers.

Someone else was there.

The darkness behind the little girl shifted.

And a man’s voice whispered from inside the hidden passage.

“Ryan Carter…”

I stopped breathing.

Because the voice sounded like someone who knew me.

May you like

The figure stepped forward slowly, holding an old photograph in his hand.

And when I saw the picture, I realized the nightmare had only just begun.
