Chapter 5: The File That Changed Everything

The police searched our house until sunrise.

They found the hidden passage.

They found evidence David had been living nearby.

But they didn’t find him.

He disappeared like he had done it before.

Like running away was something he had practiced.

I sat at the kitchen table with Emma beside me.

Lily sat on my other side, holding her sister’s hand.

Two little girls.

Two daughters.

A truth I never knew existed.

Emily sat across from me.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

“Ryan,” she whispered.

I looked up.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words felt too small.

“I need answers.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Thomas placed a laptop on the table.

The flash drive was connected.

“There are videos,” he said.

My stomach tightened.

The first file was dated six years ago.

I clicked it.

A man appeared on the screen.

My father.

I stopped breathing.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Afraid.

“Ryan,” he said.

My eyes filled instantly.

I hadn’t heard his voice in sixteen years.

“If you are watching this, then I failed.””

The video continued.

“I need you to know something. The life you believe you have was built on a secret.””

I looked at Emily.

She looked away.

My father continued.

“Before Ryan was born, our family made a mistake.””

My heart pounded.

“Your mother discovered that Ryan was not my biological son.””

The room went silent.

I stared at the screen.

No.

That couldn’t be true.

My father’s voice continued.

“But I raised him because he was my son in every way that mattered.””

I felt tears forming.

Then he said:

“The man responsible is David.””

Emily gasped.

I looked at her.

My father continued.

“David is connected to everything. Emma’s birth. Ryan’s childhood. The secrets that followed.””

Thomas looked at me.

“There’s more.””

The video changed.

A hospital room appeared.

A woman sat holding a newborn baby.

My mother.

And beside her was a man I had never seen before.

Then I noticed something.

A small mark on the baby’s neck.

The same birthmark.

Emma.

My hands shook.

My father’s voice returned.

“Ryan, if you find Emma, protect her. She is innocent.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then another file opened automatically.

A document appeared.

At the top were two names.

Ryan Carter.

Emma Miller.

Below them was a sentence that made my entire body freeze.

“DNA compatibility confirmed.””

I looked at Emily.

She was crying.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“After Lily was born.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I was afraid you would leave us.””

I looked at Emma.

She was quietly watching me.

Waiting.

I walked toward her.

I knelt down.

“Emma.””

She looked up.

“Are you mad at me?””

The question shattered me.

“No.””

I touched her hand.

“I’m not mad at you.””

She whispered:

“Do you hate me because I came here?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Then I hugged her.

And for the first time since finding her behind the wall, she smiled.

But the moment didn’t last.

Thomas suddenly looked at the window.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He pointed outside.

A figure stood across the street.

Watching the house.

David.

I grabbed my phone.

But Thomas stopped me.

“Ryan.””

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“That’s not the worst part.””

I stared at him.

“Then what is?””

Thomas pointed toward the laptop.

A new file had appeared.

A file nobody had opened.

A file created moments ago.

The name was simple.

MY SON.

I clicked it.

The screen turned black.

Then a voice played.

My mother’s voice.

A woman who had been dead for twelve years.

May you like

And she said:

“Ryan, if you found Emma… then you have finally learned the first half of the truth.””
