Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The first thing I did when the lights went out was grab Emma.
Not because I understood what was happening.
Not because I trusted anyone in that room.
But because every instinct inside me screamed one thing.
Protect her.
“Stay behind me,” I told Lily and Emma.
Lily held my hand.
“Daddy, is he coming?””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“The bad man.””
A cold wave passed through me.
Children knew things adults ignored.
Emily searched for her phone.
“Ryan, we need to go.””
I stared at her.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“No, Emily. You don’t understand.””
My voice cracked.
“I built my entire life around trusting you.””
She looked at Emma.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“By hiding her?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“By keeping her alive.””
Before I could respond, a loud crash came from downstairs.
Someone had entered the house.
Thomas immediately moved toward the hidden wall.
“What are you doing?”” I asked.
“He knows about the passage.””
Thomas pulled something from inside his coat.
A small key.
“What is that?””
“The reason Emma survived.””
He unlocked a tiny metal box hidden inside the wall.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
And a letter.
My hands went numb when I saw the name written on the envelope.
Ryan Carter.
My name.
“What is this?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Something your wife never wanted you to see.””
I opened the letter.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
Ryan,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect my granddaughter.
Granddaughter.
I looked at Emma.
My mind struggled to understand.
Thomas continued.
“Your father knew.””
I looked up.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
“My father died when I was twenty.””
Thomas nodded.
“He knew Emily before you did.””
Emily stepped back.
“What are you saying?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I’m saying your daughter’s birth father wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Slow footsteps.
Everyone stopped talking.
Someone was walking toward us.
A shadow appeared under the door.
Then a man’s voice spoke.
“You always were terrible at hiding things, Emily.””
Emily’s face lost all color.
“David.””
The door handle slowly turned.
I grabbed a fireplace poker.
The door opened.
The man standing there looked nothing like the monster I expected.
He looked ordinary.
That was worse.
He smiled.
“Hello, Ryan.””
I raised the poker.
“Stay away from my family.””
He laughed softly.
“Your family?””
His eyes moved toward Emma.
“She’s mine.””
Emma screamed.
“No!””
David’s smile disappeared.
“Emma.””
The little girl hid behind me.
“You told me Daddy was dead,” she whispered.
David tilted his head.
“I told you many things.””
The hatred in Emily’s eyes surprised me.
“You stole her.””
David looked at her.
“No. You stole her from me.””
“You hurt her!””
“I loved her.””
“You locked her away!””
His expression hardened.
“She was safer with people who understood her.””
I stepped forward.
“You hid a child inside my walls.””
David looked at me.
“Not your walls.””
He smiled.
“Your father’s house.””
The room went silent.
I felt my grip loosen.
“What?””
David looked at Thomas.
“Tell him.””
Thomas said nothing.
David laughed.
“Your father knew everything.””
I stared at the two men.
“What are you talking about?””
David walked closer.
“Your family has been keeping secrets for generations.””
Then he pulled something from his pocket.
Another photograph.
He threw it onto the floor.
I picked it up.
It showed my father.
Holding a baby.
The same baby.
Emma.
My hands started shaking.
My father had known her.
My father had been part of this.
And then David said the one thing I never expected.
“Ryan, that girl isn’t just Emily’s daughter.””
May you like
He looked directly into my eyes.
“She’s yours.””
