Chapter 7: The Brother I Never Knew
I stared at the signature until the letters blurred.
Michael Carter.
My brother.
Except I never had a brother.
At least, that was what I had always believed.
“Ryan?””
Emily’s voice came from behind me.
I turned slowly.
She saw the paper in my hand.
Her face changed.
“You know that name?””
I swallowed.
“My parents told me I was an only child.””
Thomas walked closer.
“That was another lie.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
My anger exploded.
“You knew about my daughter. You knew about my family. What else have you been hiding?””
Thomas didn’t defend himself.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I threw the paper onto the floor.
“Protect me from what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily stepped forward.
“Daddy?””
I immediately softened.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
She pointed toward the paper.
“I know that name.””
Everyone looked at her.
My heart stopped.
“What did you say?””
She looked confused.
“The man in the pictures.””
I knelt down.
“What pictures?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“The ones Mommy kept hidden.””
Emily went pale.
“Lily…”
I stood.
“You had pictures?””
Emily looked trapped.
“I didn’t want you to find them.””
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because Michael was the reason David found us.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I was drowning in information.
“Explain.””
Emily sat down slowly.
“Before I met you, before Emma disappeared, I knew Michael.””
I stared at her.
“My brother?””
She nodded.
“He wasn’t your biological brother.””
“What?””
“Your parents adopted him.””
Thomas looked away.
“And nobody told me?””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
I ran my hand through my hair.
“My entire life has been a lie.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your family believed secrets kept people safe.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And how did that work out?””
Nobody responded.
I went upstairs.
I needed answers.
In my father’s old study, I searched through drawers, shelves, anything.
Then I found something behind a loose piece of wood.
A small box.
Inside was a photograph.
My father.
My mother.
Me.
And a teenage boy standing beside us.
Michael.
On the back was a date.
Six months before my birth.
Underneath it were words written in my father’s handwriting.
“Ryan and Michael. Brothers forever.””
I sat down.
My parents had a son.
A son they erased from my life.
Then I noticed another item.
A newspaper clipping.
The headline made my stomach drop.
LOCAL MAN DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT.
The victim:
Michael Carter.
But the date was wrong.
The accident happened ten years after my parents told me I was an only child.
Someone had rewritten my history.
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Emma stood at the doorway.
“Are you okay?””
I smiled sadly.
“I don’t know.””
She walked inside.
“You’re still my daddy.””
Those words broke through everything.
I looked at her.
“How can you trust me?””
She frowned.
“Because you found me.””
A tear fell from my eye.
Then Emma reached into her pocket.
“I found this in the wall.””
She handed me a small metal object.
A key.
Engraved on it was one word.
MICHAEL.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man spoke.
“Ryan.””
I froze.
The voice was familiar.
Too familiar.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“You’re holding something that belongs to me.””
My heart stopped.
“Michael?””
Silence.
Then the man whispered:
“You finally remember.””
The call ended.
May you like
And from the other side of the room…
the old photograph of my brother fell off the shelf by itself.
