Chapter 14: The Last Secret
I stared at the photograph for almost ten minutes.
HE WASN’T ALONE.
Four words.
Four words that threatened to destroy the peace we had finally found.
I wanted to throw it away.
I wanted to believe it was just another trick.
But after everything I had learned…
I knew better.
I brought the photo to Michael.
His face changed immediately.
“Where did you get this?””
“The mailbox.””
He looked worried.
“That’s impossible.””
“What?””
“Because nobody knows this address except us.””
I felt a cold sensation.
“Then someone is watching.””
Michael nodded.
We gathered everyone.
Emily.
My mother.
Thomas.
Even Lily and Emma stayed nearby because I refused to hide things from them anymore.
No more secrets.
No more lies.
My mother examined the photograph.
Then she turned it over.
Her expression changed.
“What is it?””
She looked at me.
“This symbol.””
I looked closer.
A small mark was drawn in the corner.
A circle.
With three lines through it.
Michael went pale.
“I thought this was gone.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“David wasn’t the beginning.””
The room went silent.
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Of course there was more.
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
Then said:
“The organization behind him.””
Thomas sighed.
“I hoped we’d never have to face them.””
I looked around.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except me.
“What organization?””
My mother sat down.
“Your grandfather called them The Circle.””
I almost laughed.
“That sounds like something from a movie.””
She shook her head.
“They’re real.””
“What do they want?””
She looked at Emma.
“Control.””
I felt anger rising.
“She’s a child.””
My mother nodded.
“That’s why your grandfather protected her.””
The next few days were spent reviewing the files my father left behind.
Names.
Locations.
Evidence.
We discovered David was only one piece.
A small piece.
But the evidence was enough.
Enough to expose everyone connected to him.
And then we found something unexpected.
A final video from my father.
I pressed play.
His face appeared.
“Ryan.””
I smiled sadly.
I missed him.
“If you are watching this, then you survived.””
He paused.
“I’m sorry.””
The words hurt.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t give you a normal life.””
I looked at my daughters.
“You deserved honesty.””
The video continued.
“Emma is not the reason our family suffered.””
He looked serious.
“She is the reason our family survived.””
My eyes filled.
My father smiled.
“Ryan, the greatest mistake people make is believing family is only about blood.””
He looked directly at the camera.
“Family is about who chooses to stay.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Emma walked over.
“Daddy?””
I looked at her.
“Yes?””
“Can we stop finding secrets now?””
Everyone laughed softly.
Even me.
“Yes.””
I hugged her.
“No more secrets.””
For the first time, I believed it.
Until my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Ryan Carter?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Sarah.””
I frowned.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I was David’s first wife.””
Emily went pale.
I looked at her.
“What?””
The woman continued.
“I know you think you know the truth about Emma.””
My grip tightened.
“But you don’t.””
I stood.
“What are you talking about?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Emma was never David’s daughter.””
Silence.
Everyone stopped moving.
“What?””
The woman whispered:
“She was stolen from me.””
My heart dropped.
I looked at Emma.
Then the woman said:
“Ryan, the girl you saved…”
A pause.
May you like
“She has another family looking for her.””
The call ended.
