Chapter 8: The Brother Behind the Secret
I didn’t sleep that night.
How could I?
My entire identity had cracked open.
My parents.
My wife.
My daughter.
My brother.
Every person I trusted had been carrying a secret.
By morning, I had one goal.
Find Michael.
Thomas tried to stop me.
“Ryan, you don’t know who you’re looking for.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“I know exactly who I’m looking for.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice was serious.
“You’re looking for the version of him your parents wanted you to remember.””
I stopped.
Thomas continued.
“Michael wasn’t just your brother.””
“What was he?””
“A witness.””
“To what?””
Thomas looked at Emma.
“To the truth about her.””
I felt a familiar anger.
“Everyone keeps saying Emma is connected to something. She’s a child.””
Thomas nodded.
“She is.””
“Then why does everyone treat her like a secret?””
Because nobody answered, I already knew.
Someone had made her one.
We tracked the key.
The engraving led us to an old storage facility outside town.
Emily came with us.
She had barely spoken since the previous night.
As we walked through the dusty building, she whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t look at her.
“For what?””
“For stealing years from you.””
That hurt.
But I also saw the pain in her eyes.
“And Emma?””
“She deserved to know you.””
We reached a door at the end of the hallway.
The key fit.
Inside was a room full of boxes.
Photos.
Documents.
Recordings.
A hidden life.
I opened the first box.
Inside were letters.
All addressed to me.
From Michael.
The first one read:
Ryan,
If you ever find these, it means Mom and Dad failed to tell you the truth.
My hands shook.
I read the next line.
I never wanted to leave you.
I was forced to disappear.
I looked at Thomas.
“Who forced him?””
Before he answered, a voice came from behind us.
“Your father.””
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Different.
But I recognized him instantly.
The eyes.
The face.
Michael.
My brother.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
He stared at me.
“You look like him.””
My voice barely worked.
“Are you really Michael?””
He smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Why did everyone tell me you were dead?””
His expression changed.
“Because that was easier than telling you the truth.””
“What truth?””
Michael looked at Emma.
Then at Emily.
Then back at me.
“That Emma isn’t the only child they hid.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Michael walked into the room.
“There was another secret.””
Thomas looked nervous.
“Michael…”
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“He deserves to know.””
He opened a folder.
Inside was a birth certificate.
My name was on it.
But underneath my name was a section I had never seen.
Biological father.
A different name.
I stared at it.
My hands went numb.
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“Your entire life, you thought you were protecting your family’s name.””
He paused.
“But you never knew the truth about your own blood.””
I looked at the document.
Then at him.
“Who is my father?””
Michael answered quietly.
“The same man who is Emma’s father.””
The room went silent.
I looked toward Emily.
She was crying.
And then Michael said:
“Ryan, David isn’t just Emma’s enemy.””
May you like
He took a breath.
“He’s yours too.””
