Chapter 10: The Truth About That Night

Nobody moved.

David’s accusation hung in the air.

Michael stared at the floor.

I looked at him.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Michael didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

“Michael.””

He closed his eyes.

“I was there.””

My chest tightened.

“When Emma disappeared?””

He nodded.

Emily covered her mouth.

“No…”

Michael looked at her.

“I didn’t hurt her.””

David laughed.

“That’s what you tell yourself.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

I looked at Michael.

“Start talking.””

He took a deep breath.

“Six years ago, I discovered what David was doing.””

“What was he doing?””

“Using children as leverage.””

My fists tightened.

“Emma?””

Michael nodded.

“She was supposed to be taken away permanently.””

Emily started crying.

“I thought she was gone forever.””

Michael looked at her.

“I found her first.””

The room went silent.

“Then why didn’t you bring her back?””

Michael looked at Emma’s empty chair.

“Because someone was watching.””

“Who?””

He looked at David.

“Him.””

David shook his head.

“Lies.””

Michael continued.

“David had people everywhere. Police. Lawyers. Officials.””

Thomas nodded.

“That’s why we hid Emma.””

I stared at them.

“You hid her from David.””

Michael nodded.

“But someone betrayed us.””

Everyone looked at him.

Michael looked at me.

“Someone told David where she was.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Then David smiled.

“Your mother.””

The words felt like a punch.

“No.””

Michael looked away.

“She made a deal.””

I shook my head.

“My mother would never.””

Michael’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She thought she was protecting you.””

I couldn’t accept it.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who kissed my forehead every night.

She was connected to this.

David stepped closer.

“She chose blood over love.””

I turned toward him.

“You expect me to believe anything you say?””

He smiled.

“No.””

Then he placed another folder on the table.

“But you’ll believe her.””

Inside was a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

I opened it.

Ryan,

If you are reading this, I am gone. I need you to know something.

I made a terrible choice.

I thought I could control David.

I thought I could protect everyone.

I was wrong.

My hands trembled.

The letter continued.

The truth about your birth was hidden because David wanted power over you.

I looked up.

Michael watched me.

Your father was not the man who raised you.

But he was the man who loved you.

A tear fell onto the paper.

Then I reached the final lines.

Ryan, never trust the person who claims they saved you.

Because sometimes the person holding the key…

is the one who locked the door.

I slowly lowered the letter.

Everyone was silent.

Then I noticed something.

A reflection in the window.

Someone standing behind David.

A woman.

Older.

Familiar.

Impossible.

Michael saw her too.

His face turned pale.

“No.””

I whispered:

“What?””

He stepped backward.

“That’s not possible.””

The woman opened the door.

And said:

“Hello, Ryan.””

My entire body froze.

May you like

Because I knew that voice.

It was my mother.
