Chapter 6: The Voice From the Grave
My mother’s voice filled the kitchen.
“Ryan, if you found Emma… then you have finally learned the first half of the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
It was impossible.
My mother had been dead for twelve years.
I remembered standing beside her hospital bed. I remembered holding her hand when she took her last breath. I remembered the funeral, the flowers, the empty house afterward.
But there she was.
Speaking to me.
From a computer screen.
Emily covered her mouth.
“Oh my God…”
Thomas stared at the laptop like he had seen a ghost.
“What is this?”” I demanded.
No one answered.
The recording continued.
“Ryan, I know you will have questions. I know you will feel betrayed. But everything I did was to protect you.””
My hands tightened around the edge of the table.
Protect me?
My entire life had been built on lies.
My mother continued.
“There is a reason you were kept away from certain people. There is a reason your father changed his name. There is a reason David wanted Emma hidden.””
The screen flickered.
Then my mother appeared again.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Ryan, David was never just Emily’s husband.””
Emily looked down.
“He was involved with our family long before you knew him.””
I turned toward her.
“What does that mean?””
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
Thomas answered quietly.
“It means David knew Ryan before he met you.””
The room went silent.
I looked back at the screen.
My mother’s voice continued.
“David believed Emma was the key to something your grandfather left behind.””
I frowned.
“What?””
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“The Carter family inheritance.””
I almost laughed.
An inheritance?
That was the secret?
But then she said something that made me stop.
“Not money.””
The video paused for a second.
“Information.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“What information?””
My mother continued.
“Your grandfather spent years collecting evidence against powerful people. He discovered a network of criminals who controlled businesses, politicians, and police departments.””
My stomach tightened.
“And David?””
“He was part of it.””
Emily suddenly stood.
“I didn’t know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I swear, Ryan. I knew David was dangerous, but I never knew how deep it went.””
I looked at her.
“You knew he was dangerous and still let Emma get near him?””
She started crying.
“I was young. I was trapped.””
I wanted to be angry.
I was angry.
But when I looked at Emma hiding beside Lily, all I could see was a child who had spent years afraid.
The recording continued.
“Ryan, there is one thing you must understand.””
My mother’s voice became softer.
“Emma was never hidden because she was unwanted.””
A tear rolled down her cheek on the screen.
“She was hidden because someone was trying to kill her.””
The room froze.
Emma looked up.
“Kill me?””
I immediately pulled her close.
“No one is going to hurt you.””
But deep down, I didn’t know if I could keep that promise.
The video continued.
“The evidence is stored somewhere only you can access.””
I leaned closer.
“What?””
My mother smiled sadly.
“Your father knew you would find this one day.””
Then the screen went black.
A message appeared.
ENTER THE FIRST MEMORY.
I stared at it.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Your father created a security system.””
“For what?””
“For you.””
I looked at him.
“How would he know I would find this?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t have to.
A sound came from upstairs.
A door closing.
Everyone froze.
Lily whispered:
“Daddy…”
I grabbed the nearest object I could use as a weapon.
“Stay here.””
I walked toward the stairs.
One step.
Two.
Three.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
Then I saw it.
A piece of paper sitting on the floor.
My name was written on it.
I picked it up.
Three words were written underneath.
YOU REMEMBER ME.
My blood ran cold.
Because below the message was a signature.
A name I hadn’t seen in years.
May you like
A name that belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
My brother.
