Chapter 2: The Photograph From the Past
The man stepped out of the hidden space like he belonged there.
Like he had been waiting.
He was older, maybe in his sixties, with gray hair and tired eyes. His clothes were worn, but his expression was calm.
Too calm.
He held the photograph toward me.
“Look closely,” he said.
I didn’t move.
My entire body was focused on the little girl behind him.
“My daughter,” I whispered.
Emily immediately looked away.
That was the moment I knew.
She knew something.
“Emily,” I said slowly.
“Why does that man have a picture of our family?””
She didn’t answer.
The old man looked at her.
“You never told him.””
Emily started crying harder.
The little girl pressed herself against my leg.
I looked down at her.
She wasn’t afraid of me.
She was afraid of losing me.
“What is your name?”” I asked gently.
She swallowed.
“Emma.””
The name hit me strangely.
Not because I knew her.
Because I had heard it before.
Years ago.
Before Lily.
Before my marriage.
Before everything.
The old man handed me the photograph.
My fingers trembled as I looked at it.
It showed Emily.
But she looked younger.
Much younger.
She was standing beside another woman I didn’t recognize.
And in the corner of the picture was a baby.
A baby girl.
Emma.
I looked up.
“No.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Ryan…”
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You knew about her?””
Emily covered her mouth.
The old man sighed.
“My name is Thomas Miller.””
I stared at him.
“And who are you?””
He looked at Emma.
“I’m the one who kept her alive.””
The words made no sense.
“What are you talking about?””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Six years ago, Emma disappeared.””
I looked at Emily.
She was crying silently.
“Six years ago?”” I repeated.
Thomas nodded.
“She was declared missing. Everyone believed she was gone.””
I looked at Emma.
She looked exactly like Lily.
Small hands.
Soft voice.
Same innocent smile.
Except Lily was my daughter.
Wasn’t she?
A horrible thought entered my mind.
I turned toward Emily.
“Tell me the truth.””
She didn’t respond.
“Emily.””
Her shoulders shook.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at Emma.
“Of losing you.””
The room became silent.
I felt like the air had disappeared.
“What does that mean?””
Emily slowly stood.
“I was pregnant before we met.””
My heart sank.
She continued.
“I had a daughter.””
I stared at Emma.
“Her?””
Emily nodded.
“My husband at the time… he was dangerous. When I tried to leave, he threatened me. He said he would take Emma away.””
My fists tightened.
“Your husband?””
Emily looked down.
“I never told you because I thought I escaped that life.””
Thomas interrupted.
“You didn’t escape.””
Everyone turned.
The old man’s face became serious.
“He found her.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Who?””
Thomas looked toward the hidden passage.
“David.””
Emily whispered the name.
“David is dead.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No. He wants you to believe that.””
A sudden noise came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Everyone froze.
I looked toward the ceiling.
“Is someone else here?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Then my phone rang.
The sound echoed through the room.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then a voice whispered:
“Ryan…”
My blood turned cold.
“Who is this?””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“You finally found my daughter.””
I looked at Emma.
She started shaking.
The voice continued.
“But you’re too late.””
The call ended.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Ryan, we have to leave.””
“Why?””
Her face went pale.
“Because David doesn’t forgive people who take what belongs to him.””
Then the lights in the house went out.
May you like
And from somewhere inside the walls…
someone started knocking.
