Chapter 9: The Truth Vanessa Never Expected
I stared at Vanessa’s message for nearly a minute.
You found the wrong account.
Not “I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Not “This is a misunderstanding.””
Not “Why are you accusing me?””
A person who was innocent would have been confused.
A person who was guilty would know exactly what I was looking for.
I called her.
She answered after one ring.
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
Her voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
My stomach dropped.
“Find what?””
“You know.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
“Vanessa.””
“You have no idea what Claire did.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then tell me.””
“She was preparing to destroy me.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
A bitter laugh.
“Because she thought she was protecting Nia.””
“She was.””
Vanessa went silent.
Then said:
“You really believe she was perfect.””
“No.””
I looked at the photograph of Claire on the dashboard.
“She wasn’t perfect.””
I paused.
“But she loved our daughter.””
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she said:
“You should ask yourself why Claire hid things from you.””
The call ended.
I sat there, angry and confused.
Because everyone had a piece of the story.
Claire.
Rebecca.
Vanessa.
But nobody was giving me the whole picture.
When I got home, Nia was waiting.
“Did you find out?””
I nodded.
“Some of it.””
She looked worried.
“Is Mom in trouble?””
The question broke my heart.
“No.””
“She’s not mad at me?””
I looked at her.
“Your mother spent her last days trying to protect you.””
Nia’s eyes filled.
“I miss her.””
I sat beside her.
“Me too.””
For a while, we just sat there.
Then Nia quietly said:
“I remember something.””
“What?””
“The music box.””
I turned toward her.
“Before Vanessa took it?””
She nodded.
“Mom showed me something.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
“She told me never to open it unless I was with you.””
I froze.
“Nia, why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I forgot.””
Then she frowned.
“Actually…”
She stood up and ran upstairs.
A minute later, she came back holding a tiny key.
My breath caught.
“Where did you get that?””
“It was in my old jewelry drawer.””
I took it carefully.
A small silver key.
Attached was a note.
Mom’s handwriting.
“Only for Nia.””
My hands trembled.
“Nia…”
“She wanted me to have it.””
We rushed to Claire’s old bedroom.
The music box wasn’t there.
Vanessa had taken it.
But the key had a small marking.
A number.
318.
I looked around.
“Do you know what that means?””
Nia shook her head.
Then she walked toward the old bookshelf.
She touched the side.
“Mom used to hide things here.””
I moved the books.
Nothing.
Then Nia pointed.
“There.””
Behind the bottom shelf was a small hidden compartment.
Inside was a locked metal box.
My heart raced.
The key fit.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
A flash drive.
And one final letter.
This one was addressed to both of us.
Daniel and Nia.
I opened it.
My eyes moved across the first line.
“If you found this, then Vanessa knows I discovered the truth.””
I looked at my daughter.
Then continued reading.
“The person you think betrayed me was not the first person who lied.””
I stopped.
A cold feeling spread through me.
Because Claire wasn’t writing about Vanessa.
Not completely.
The next sentence proved it.
“The reason I never told Daniel everything is because the person who helped me uncover Vanessa’s actions was someone Daniel trusts completely.””
I slowly looked up.
Nia whispered:
“Who?””
I didn’t know.
But then the flash drive beside the letter turned on by itself.
A video file appeared.
The title made my blood freeze.
*“The Truth About Nia’s Guardian.””*
And underneath it was the name of the person who recorded it.
Not Vanessa.
Not Rebecca.
May you like
Someone else.
Someone I never expected.
