Chapter 17: The Brother Who Hid the Truth

Nobody spoke.

The video kept playing.

Claire’s face remained on the screen.

But I couldn’t hear anything for several seconds.

Michael.

My brother.

The person who had helped me bury my wife.

The person who had stood beside me while I cried.

The person who told me he wanted to protect Nia.

My mind refused to accept it.

“No.””

The word escaped before I realized I had spoken.

Nia looked at me.

“Dad?””

I stared at the screen.

Claire continued.

“Daniel, I know this will hurt.””

She paused.

“But Michael was the first person I suspected.””

My hands tightened.

“Why?””

Claire answered like she could hear me.

“Because he knew everything.””

The video showed documents.

Financial records.

Emails.

Transfers.

Then Claire’s voice returned.

“He knew about the trust account.””

A new image appeared.

“He knew about the guardianship papers.””

Another image.

“He knew where I kept my private records.””

My stomach twisted.

Because all of it was true.

Michael had access.

Michael had trust.

Michael had opportunity.

Claire continued.

“But I needed proof.””

The video stopped for a moment.

Then she said something unexpected.

“I also needed Vanessa.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked ashamed.

Claire continued:

“Vanessa did something unforgivable.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“She took what belonged to Nia.””

My daughter looked away.

“But she did not create the plan.””

The room was silent.

“Michael manipulated her.””

Vanessa whispered:

“She told me.””

I turned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She told me after Claire died.””

“What did she tell you?””

“That Michael convinced me the necklace was the only thing that could protect me.””

My anger rose.

“You believed him?””

“I was scared.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I had two children. I had bills. I was alone.””

“That doesn’t excuse what you did.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

I looked back at the video.

Claire continued.

“Michael knew Vanessa was vulnerable.””

“He used her.””

“He made her think she was saving herself.””

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The jewelry.

The accounts.

The lies.

Michael didn’t need to steal everything himself.

He just needed people desperate enough to do it for him.

Claire’s voice softened.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something.””

The screen showed her hands holding the necklace.

“I never wanted you to hate Vanessa.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“I wanted you to understand her role.””

The video paused.

Then:

“She made mistakes.””

A pause.

“But Michael made choices.””

Those words destroyed the last defense I had for my brother.

Elena looked at me.

“Claire found out before she died.””

“How?””

“Michael confessed.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Not completely.””

Elena sighed.

“He admitted enough that Claire knew she was right.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Claire asked me not to.””

Again.

Another person protecting me with silence.

Another secret.

I hated secrets.

But I understood why Claire created them.

Michael was dangerous.

Not because he was violent.

Because he was patient.

The video continued.

“There is one more thing.””

Claire looked nervous.

I had never seen that expression on her face.

“Daniel, Michael knows about Nia’s inheritance.””

I leaned forward.

“He believes there is something hidden.””

The necklace.

The music box.

The documents.

“He will not stop until he finds it.””

Then Claire whispered:

“But he doesn’t know the most important thing.””

The video ended.

I stared.

“What?””

Elena looked at Nia.

“Your mother told me.””

“What?””

“She said Michael would search everywhere.””

Elena reached for the USB drive.

“But he would never search the one place he thought was useless.””

I looked confused.

“Where?””

Elena smiled sadly.

“The place Claire kept her most important memories.””

I thought about the house.

The boxes.

The photographs.

Then Nia suddenly stood.

“The garden.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Nia’s eyes widened.

“Mom’s garden.””

Elena nodded.

“She knew you would remember.””

I grabbed my jacket.

But before we left, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Michael.

Only one sentence.

*I know you found Elena.*

My blood ran cold.

A second message appeared.

*Now I know where Claire hid the final proof.*

I stared at the screen.

Because there was only one way he could know.

Someone had told him.

Someone was still helping him.

May you like

And then the third message arrived.

*Look beside your daughter before you look anywhere else.*
