Chapter 16: The Woman at Claire’s Bedside

For a moment, nobody moved.

The house was completely silent.

Then Nia appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Dad?””

I turned around quickly.

She was holding something.

A small envelope.

My heart stopped.

“Nia.””

She walked down slowly.

“I know who Mom meant.””

Vanessa stood up.

“Who?””

Nia looked at her.

“The woman who was there when Mom died.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Nia looked down at the envelope.

“She told me never to say her name unless I had to.””

I stepped closer.

“Nia, you can tell me.””

She swallowed.

“Her name is Elena.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Vanessa reacted immediately.

Her face changed.

“You know her?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You do?””

She sat down slowly.

“I thought she left.””

“Who is Elena?”” I asked.

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“She was Claire’s hospice nurse.””

My breath caught.

“Rebecca was the hospital nurse.””

“Yes.””

“Then who was Elena?””

Vanessa looked toward Nia.

“The person Claire trusted at the very end.””

Nia opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten address.

And a small note.

Dad,

If you are reading this, it means the people who were supposed to protect Nia failed.

Please find Elena.

She knows the truth.

I felt tears burn my eyes.

Claire had known.

She had prepared for every possibility.

Not because she wanted to leave.

Because she loved our daughter enough to keep fighting after she was gone.

We found Elena two hours later.

She lived in a small apartment outside the city.

When she opened the door and saw Nia, she immediately covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Nia stared.

“You know me?””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I held you the day your mother brought you home from the hospital.””

Nia froze.

“You knew my mom?””

Elena smiled sadly.

“I loved your mother.””

She invited us inside.

The apartment was filled with photographs.

Not of celebrities.

Not of expensive things.

Just family moments.

And there was one picture of Claire.

Healthy.

Laughing.

Holding a newborn Nia.

Elena touched the frame.

“She was the strongest person I ever knew.””

I sat down.

“Claire left a message.””

Elena nodded.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

“She told me she was preparing.””

“For what?””

Elena looked at Nia.

“For the possibility that people around you would choose money over love.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

I placed the documents on the table.

“Robert showed me a guardianship agreement.””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“He still has that?””

“You know about it?””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

She sighed.

“Claire created a fake agreement.””

I nodded.

“I figured.””

“But Robert didn’t know it was fake.””

“Why?””

“Because Claire needed him to reveal himself.””

I leaned forward.

“How?””

Elena reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a small box.

Inside was a USB drive.

“Claire recorded everything.””

I stared.

“Everything?””

“She knew she might not have time.””

I looked at Nia.

“She left this for you.””

Nia touched the box.

“Me?””

Elena nodded.

“Your mother wanted you to know something.””

“What?””

“That none of this happened because of you.””

Nia looked down.

Elena continued.

“She was afraid you would grow up believing people left because you weren’t enough.””

My daughter’s eyes filled.

“But they did.””

I felt my heart break.

Elena shook her head.

“No, sweetheart.””

She reached across the table.

“People failed you. That is different.””

Nia cried quietly.

Then Elena looked at me.

“There is something you need to know.””

“What?””

“Claire never suspected you.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She never believed you would hurt Nia.””

A weight lifted from my chest.

“She knew you loved your daughter.””

I looked away.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because Robert had access to your emails.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“He monitored information.””

“He was spying on us?””

“Yes.””

Elena looked at the USB drive.

“Claire believed if Robert knew she had evidence, he would destroy everything.””

I stared at the drive.

“What’s on it?””

Elena’s voice became quiet.

“The full story.””

We plugged it into my laptop.

A video file appeared.

Claire’s face appeared on screen.

Older.

Weaker.

But still Claire.

My breath caught.

“Daniel.””

Her voice.

After all these years.

“Hi, my love.””

I covered my mouth.

Nia grabbed my hand.

Claire continued.

“If you are watching this, then I’m sorry.””

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“I’m sorry I left you with questions.””

She paused.

“But I need you to know something.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“The person who hurt our family is not the person you think.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at Elena.

Claire continued:

“Vanessa made terrible choices.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“But she was not the beginning.””

The room went silent.

“The beginning was someone who knew how to make everyone blame each other.””

Claire took a breath.

“Daniel, the person responsible for everything started before my illness.””

My heart raced.

Then Claire said the name.

May you like

And I felt the entire world shift.

“Your brother Michael.””
